Seattle Cop Punch Goes Worldwide

Posted by on Wed, Jun 16, 2010 at 4:32 PM

Now the news is over on the BBC (also nice and high up on the home page).

It must be said: You don't have to be the Queen of England to know that you don't punch a lady in the face.

Someone (hello, new chief?) better straighten out Seattle's police but quick.

Ladies don't fight with cops -- especially while their (far more sensible) male companion tries to pull them away from all the ruckus!

If a cop sees you break a law (albeit, a dumb one) and tells you to stop and come over - you do what the cop says. And, you definitely don't start scrapping with the cop. The girl is lucky he didn't shove her face into the cement. Had she been male and a bit older, I'm positive that's what would have happened. You don't scrap/resist with a cop unless you want to pick gravel out of your face.

Ladies walk a little further down the block to use the sky-bridge the city installed especially for them instead of illegally jaywalking and then verbally and physically assaulting a police officer.

Punching a lady in the face is so lame, something a teabagger might try.
What you need to do is get a bunch of your friends, then mock and taunt and laugh at the lady.

Whoa, uh, Bethany?

Your post is uber-sexist. ANYONE who hits a cop is going to feel some negative repercussions from it.

The average fellow does not punch the average lady, no. That was most definitely NOT the case on Rainier Ave on Monday afternoon -- we had a police officer and a couple of entitled-feeling teenagers: nary a lady in sight.

Please reset your feminism filters. Thank you.

Bethany,
No one should ever accost/taunt a person with a loaded weapon. Period.

Given a choice, the young women were extraordinarily fortunate to have a police officer, male or female just punch one of them in the face. If it had been any other adult person carrying a loaded weapon they wouldn't not have been so lucky. A loaded weapon carries a far more lethal "punch". What they did was categorically stupid. And, they hardly acted like ladies.

Girl got exactly what she asked for. I'm usually the first to think the cop is in the wrong, having come of age in a town with a violent and corrupt police force, but the video is clear. Girl - no lady - brought this down on her own fool head. Since when do criminals caught in the act just get to wave The Hand of Dismissal and walk away? Throw the book at her.

Pretending that this is police brutality distracts from real instances of police brutality. And we have genuine instances of this happening recently and nearby, on tape.

As for punching ladies in the face: never done it myself, but would do it for sure if said lady were attacking me. Fortunately, I don't have a line of work where that happens a lot.

I'm totally with the "get off me, get off me" girl. Fuck that bullshit. Nobody gets to grab my body and force it to their will unless they are trying to protect another human from my actions. It freaks me out that we give this kind of power to the cops, and freaks me out even more that people (like these commenters) are so blindly obedient to the notion of physical authority that the police assume.
That guy just punched a 17 year old chick in the face over a JAYWALKING incident!!! You have got to be fucking kidding me? If he doesn't know of a better way to enforce jaywalking laws then he's not smart enough to be trusted with authority.

That's right, you don't punch in the face who bigger than you and is assaulting you, you Taser her or spray her with pepper spray. He was punched her as a courtesy instead of the Taser if you ask me. No - it started as a jaywalking incident; then the girls escalated it to a resisting arrest incident, and then to an assaulting a police officer and interfering with an arrest incident. She didn't get the punch until the third-tier escalation.

@29: It's called the social contract. We vest certain kinds of authority in civil law enforcement personnel as a way of keeping order without resorting to vigilantism and chaos. They have the authority to stop and detain people for investigation of wrongdoing -- even wrongdoings that you think should be legal -- and the authority to use force to stop people who do not voluntarily cooperate.

That's pretty much where their authority ends, though. They are not the judges, and they cannot convict you of a crime, nor unilaterally force you to pay the fine for a traffic infraction. They are there to ensure that people who are suspected of breaking laws cooperate with the due process which the United States constitution guarantees to both the accuser and the accused. Without that, we would not have laws that meant anything.

It's astonishing to me how many people are ignorant of basic civics. You reap tremendous benefits from living in a society that vests the power of arrest in civilian law enforcement, and yet apparently believe that people should be able to pick and choose when they want to cooperate with police orders. Fail.

Again, didn't see how this started in the video (how it led up to the punch and why he was physically handling her and arresting her for a minor violation like jaywalking), but these "do whatever cops tell you at all times or you'll deserve what you get" responses to this are really disturbing, similar comments appeared during the Henry Louis Gates flap -- you do whatever a cop says, even when no crime is committed and even when you're in your own home without disagreement... or else you deserve the consequences? Is this a police state? It's bullying. Disgusting.

@38: Saying that the police have the authority to detain someone under investigation is different from saying that people must do whatever the police say. Moreover, Gates was in his own home when that incident happened, and the girl who got punched in this video was attempting to use force to prevent a police officer from detaining a suspect.

Trying to draw equivalencies here hurts the conversation. There is a very real need to check police authority, but when people like yourself try to throw every single use of force into the "OMG POLICE STATE!!!!" bucket, it hurts any real attempt to increase accountability.

To me, it seems like a real shame that people are willing to lump this guy in with Paul Schene. Schene lost his shit and beat the crap out of a smaller girl because she was mouthing off. The cop in this new video NEVER lost it -- he was in control of himself the entire time, wasn't trying to hurt anyone, didn't cause any injuries, and successfully detained both suspects.

Yes, there may be problems with the way he attempted to handle too many people without any backup, and yes it all started with a minor traffic infraction. But this was not an abuse of authority, and it wasn't someone looking for skulls to crack. This has nothing to do with life under the gestapo.

@27 and @41 FTW(s)

SLOG has lost it on this one. I love to join the policy brutality bandwagon as much as the next knee-jerk anti-police liberal hereabouts, but in this case the cop was COMPLETELY within the bounds of his job as far as I am concerned.

It's totally beside the point whether it was worth his time dealing with jaywalking infractions. Once the girls assaulted him, they were going to get taken down. And this cop did NOT lose his shit in any way.

Did he have to punch them? I.e. could he have used some other means to subdue them? Maybe, maybe not - but it was well withins his prerogative as a cop.

And WTF - who cares what a polite gentleman would do in OTHER circumstances? This ain't polite discourse. This is assualting a cop fer chrissakes.

And any other means may have been worse (taser, chokehold, etc).

SLOG - get a grip.

In my experience, driving down either Rainier or MLK at night or day is like playing human ten pins wherein 'pedestrians' are basically expressing their right-of-way and daring you to hit them.

The record shows that several pins have in fact been knocked down. But then most Seattle pedestrians with their little hand-held devices are walking in their bubble-boy world, oblivious to the potential loss of life they seem to be assiduously courting.

Here's what mystifies me: since everyone besides obvious retards agrees the cop was completely justified in what he did, why is this story being picked up by CNN, BBC, etc?

Comments on every news site are running like 10 to 1 in favor of the cop, everyone but the fringies (Bethany, Heatherly, the NAACP) knows this was just a cop doing what he was supposed to do, and yet every media outlet from the Stranger to BBC is treating it as some kind of police scandal. Bethany is 100% right on this one. I can't believe the rest of you are blind to the situation. It's obvious from the video The Ladies only pushed/hit the cop 7 or 8 times. Definitely no more then 10, 12 times at the most. 18 tops. He should have at the very least waited until The Ladies had pushed him to the ground before he attempted to stop their assault. I mean come on they didn't even have his gun out of his holster yet. Not to mention they clearly hadn't scratched an eye out with any of their Ladylike shoves to his face.

One thing Bethany didn't bring up in her rather astute assessment of the situation is how the cop being violently assaulted by The Ladies never used the Vulcan Death Grip on them. I'm a little disappointed she didn't bring this up. It fits perfectly with the rest of her impeccable logic about what should not have been done. Obviously, he easily could have used the Vulcan Grip on The Ladies to peacefully and nonviolently stop their violence.

Anyways Bethany give me a call if you want me to show you the secrets of the Vulcan Death Grip some night. Perhaps you and I could then teach the police force together (hello, new chief we know you are reading slog). I absolutely agree we need to straighten this police force out before they run wild through the streets of Seattle blatantly defending themselves from attack.

Sincerely (in a non-police state sort of way) yours

P.S. I'm a little worried you might think the Vulcan Death Grip is to extreme. The word "Death" does make it sound a little on the harsh side. However, rest assured that it only puts violently out of control Ladies into a peaceful slumber full of dreams about unicorns and puppies floating down rainbows.

SLOG commentators aren't smarter than SLOG writers, but like most people they ARE more prone to self-righteous lynchmob behavior.
Judging from the majority of comments it's clear that most don't believe the incident has anything to do with race. While I doubt that the majority of SLOG commentators consider themselves racist, I doubt they have much experience being black and poor in America. Without resorting to racist logic, would they be able to understand why blacks in America are disproportionately impoverished and imprisoned? Could they even comprehend that laws are not always enforced among all groups equally or in the same manner?

“Lady”: A well-mannered and considerate woman with high standards of proper behavior.

By no definition conceivable was that woman a lady. Had she been a lady she would have behaved civilly, taken her citation, and gone about her business. That’s kind of the lesson of this incident. If you behave like a savage you should not be surprised if you are dealt with savagely.

While I doubt that #63/#82 would consider himself or herself RACIST, I doubt they have much experience being black and poor in America. Without resorting to racist logic, would they be able to understand why blacks in America are smacking cops around & jaywalking? Could they even comprehend that laws apply to all groups equally or in the same manner?

"your devil's advocate" has insulted all African Americans by insinuating that they cannot rise above anti-social behavior because of their race and require bourgeois academic theoretical excuses for their crimes. And yes, my ancestors come from Africa. Everybody's do.

@83 ,"I doubt they have much experience being black and poor in America"

And do you and the rest of the apologists for these black thugs have any experience being a white cop in America?

@84: Please read my post again & maybe #63's for context (I flipped his words around). I'm no one's apologist, and in this case (my point was) I'm on this cop's side 100%. To answer your question, no I really don't.

The women was interferring with police business....he should have knocked her out or tazed her so he could get on with his arrest. The only thing I fault him for was the wimpy qaulity of the punch. Anyone who actually knows how to hit would have cold cocked her on the first shrt.

Our society has transitioned to gender neutrality and no special consideration is to be given based on gender. She is a person who resisted arrest! She got less than she deserved!

Jaywalk in front of the police, the police are going to want to talk at you about that.

shove said cop, the cop is going to want to arrest you.

shove said cop again while he is trying to arrest you and yelling for you to do what he is telling you, and you get punched in the face.

I am in the cops corner on this one. gender or age be damned. never touch a cop when they are talking to you about something you did, even something as minor as a jaywalk.

The real issue here is racism and it needs to be acknowledged once and for all. I am sick and tired of accusations of racism coming to the surface only when someone white is involved in situations and circumstances involving someone black. Interestingly enough, when the situation, like this one, doesn't warrant an accusation of racism against the white "perpetrator", then it's just a story. In this case a story about a cop that is out of control. The reality here is that it racism. Racism against the white cop. Call it what it is and stop sweeping the "rest of the story" under the carpet. No problem will ever be resolved unless or until the actual reason is acknowledged and confronted.
