More Animals on the Cover This Week

Posted by on Tue, Jun 15, 2010 at 5:17 PM

We're up to our ears in animal art around here. We just realized there was a bird on last week's cover; there was a bird (and a slaughtered elephant) on the cover two weeks before that; there were three birds smoking on the cover two weeks before that; and the cover that comes out tomorrow has a cluster of imaginary animals, a totem pole of carved animals, and a bird in the corner.

I looove animals smoking designs. Only animals should smoke, really, except in forest-fire season. I have a throw pillow with print of some sort of animal smoking a cigarette.

It could be worse, it could be foreskins... I guess we have the little baby Jesus to thank that cover art brainstorming sessions don't coincide with the Frizzelle/Bissell Live Slog soccer matches. (And thanks for making me late to work today, too.)

I, for one, am tired of the animal trend in art/craft/design over the last decade or so.

Deer, birds, retro-70s illustrations of owls, hats or backpacks with pointy ears, ironic taxidermy, ironic wolf T-shirts, ironic Mickey Mouse T-shirts, Animal Collective, "spirit animals", MFA theses consisting of out-of-focus photographs of dogs, LOLcats, centaur fetishists, furries, using illustrations of extinct animals for one's avatar, etc.

Totally agree @3, people who do that are such dodos.

Most animals prefer to vaporize, cause smoking has inherent risks.

Yay, more cultural appropriation. Totem poles for all!
