Sorry Won't Cut It: An "apologetic advertising campaign" by BP for causing the (oops, their bad!) biggest oil spill in U.S. history is reportedly earning the company more criticism than sympathy.

Shot: A 20-year-old man was shot in the leg while he was seated in a parked car early yesterday morning in South Seattle.

Obesity and Babies: Is the American obesity epidemic a contributing factor to record-high rates of C-sections and an increase in birth defects and infant deaths?

WTF?! Elton John performed at Rush Limbaugh's wedding last night.

Skillz: An inmate in Wenatchee, Washington internally carried a cigarette lighter, rolling papers, a baggie of tobacco the size of a golf ball, a smaller baggie of marijuana, a 1-inch smoking pipe, a bottle of tattoo ink and eight tattoo needles into jail. DAMN.

Throw Away the Key: Victims of serial rapist Richard Troy Gillmore are rallying to keep him behind bars.

The Owls Are Not What They Seem: Have you always dreamed of being waited on by Special Agent Dale Cooper or having your table bussed by Hawk? Today, Linda's Tavern is serving up Twin Peaks Sunday brunch. Wear a costume and have some pie! The coffee will be black as midnight on a moonless night, guaranteed.

Scary/Weird: Details about Friday's strange disappearance of a seven year old Oregon boy.

Ugly/Beautiful: After 10 years, Experience Music Project is apparently still "perplexing" Seattleites.

Body Recovered: Rescue police brought the body of Seattle skier Arne Backstrom down off a Peruvian mountain yesterday, two days after his death.

Re: Obesity and Babies:
Overheard at Starbucks last night, from overweight mum to overweight 10 year old son, while handing him a grande caramel mocha frappuccino with whipped cream: "Drink this, it'll make you thin."

(Starbucks has a sign up saying that drinks containing coffee have fewer calories...)

People have a hard time with structures like the EMP because they think that everything has to mean something or have a purpose. They need to be able to tie everything together into something sensible. In other words they are boring.

I hated EMP when it was first built, probably more because of the idea that a rich guy could build anything he wanted, anywhere he wanted.

But it's grown on me, and I really like it now and consider it a pretty cool part of Seattle: As the prior person noted, it's so untraditional that people don't quite know how to comprehend it.

Also: You all know the outside metal sheathing is put on with square-drive fasteners, right? And every piece was custom-made, too. Two minutes with a cordless drill and YOU can OWN an AUTHENTIC and UNIQUE PIECE of EMP. Wouldn't that be awesome?

My mane problem with EMP is the color, I wish it were just silver like the Gugenheim in Bilbao.

Thanks for the tip about the latest Belltown shootings, Riz. I looked it up. After closing time, sounds like somewhere by the Croc:

My first thought about Elton playing at Rush's wedding was: if you were gay, why would you play at a wedding of someone who is opposed to you being able to get married? (Yeah, I know, Elton's getting $1 million, but it's not like he needs the money.)

But then, curious about Rush's actual position on same-sex marriage (I presumed he's against it but what do I know...I never listen to him) I came across this this post which says that Rush & Elton apparently don't differ at all in that regard, that both support same-sex civil unions but are opposed to same-sex marriage (of course, unlike Rush, I'm sure Elton would have no problem with same-sex marriage and isn't opposed to it in the same way Rush is; he just seems to feel it's unnecessary.)

The bride is West Palm Beach resident Kathryn Rogers, 33. Limbaugh is 59.

Anyway, what puzzles me more is why so many women marry guys who are that much older than they are. I can understand why guys marry women who are so much younger but if I were a woman, I wouldn't want to be having sex with a guy old enough to be my father. Okay...okay...I know the attraction is usually money -- you rarely (if ever?) find women marrying guys who are 26 years older when the guys are teachers or bus driver. But even with the cushy lifestyle that money gives you and the fact that Big Sugar Daddy won't be around for all that long, you still have to have have sex with that person...presumably a lot.

@11, in response to your last paragraph.

She definitely married for the money. So she has to let him plug her every now and then... I'm sure she thinks about diamonds and luxury vacations while he's banging away.

Prostitutes have to have sex with people they likely find repulsive too, but they're still in business.

5/Dr. Awesome, my path has been the opposite of yours: I loved EMP when it was first built because it was so untraditional but now, while I don't exactly hate it, I've grown much less enamored of it. It's like meeting a woman on a date who seems really exciting and cool at first because she's different but then, over time, she becomes kind of annoying.

And what I've grown less fond of in particular are the colors. Like 8/vooodoo84, I think it would look better if was just one color, like Gehry's similar Bilbao Guggenheim or his Weisman Art Museum on the U. of Minnesota campus (although I'd prefer the gold or purple over the silver) or two colors at most. I don't like the red that much and I detest the robin's egg blue and junky-looking green panels on the 5th Ave side. If I could give EMP a makeover, I'd strip off the green panel crap, redo it in the purple and gold colors and put a large nicely-landscaped reflecting pool on the Seattle Center side.

7/robot ghost: The EMP is even more ugly than that Gaudi crap in Spain, and that's saying something.

Have you been to Barcelona and seen Gaudi's buildings in person? I can understand people not liking La Sagrada Familia (although the ceramics on top of the towers are colorful and pretty cool) and the exterior of Casa Mila (which I find to be clunky-looking, and I hate the twisty wrought-iron balconies) but it's hard for me to understand how anyone can not like the very cool rooftop of Casa Mila, or the entire nearby Casa Batllo, particularly at night when it's lit up. I also like his Moorish-looking Casa Vicens.

Banging...and grunting and sweating. The thought of it makes my skin crawl but, on the other hand, I suppose it's not a bad choice compared to working in an underground coal mine. Both are nasty jobs and involve a shaft but at least marrying and fucking a much older rich guy isn't going to kill you and you make a shitload more money.

I could be wrong but I think men are much less likely to be willing to trade sex with a much older woman for a cushy lifestyle than women are to do that with men.

Prostitutes have to have sex with people they likely find repulsive too, but they're still in business.

Very true. But they can walk away from a repulsive client any time they want.

@14

Hey, maybe he's really good in bed. Fat obnoxious jerks can still be good fucks. It happens. We don't know.

The Elton John thing almost surprises me, except that Elton John is one of those guys who'd basically be a total right-winger if he didn't happen to be gay. He's a racist, a sexist, and a rich sold-out douchebag who just happens to be gay. Not even particularly intelligent, from what I've seen over the years.

And the EMP is the ugliest piece of shit in the history of Seattle architecture. It's endlessly galling to me that immediately after getting rid of that ridiculous white glacier thing at the base of QA Hill, we proceeded to let Paul Allen build another one just like it, only 50 times bigger and multi-colored. If it was at least a giant musical instrument that made noise -- like if you could blow in one end of it and make a noise that people could hear in Tibet, then I could understand it being such a stupid shape. As it is, it's just stupid. Like when Allen broke that glass guitar to kick off the opening of the thing. It's all just a huge monument to an arrogant nerd's ego.

Judah, that's true; Rush could be really good in bed. Who knows, maybe his grunting drives women wild. But if he was a 59 year old fat obnoxious jerk who was really good in bed and had a teacher's salary, a 33 year old woman wouldn't be marrying him.

You don't find anything redeeming about EMP? Not even any of the colors? EMP is ugly (although not completely so) but at least -- like the new downtown library -- it's interesting and ugly. To me the Kingdome was the ugliest large building in Seattle; it was boring and ugly.

Congrats to Rush! We wish him every hapiness.

If folks actually listend to him, instead of bashing him at every turn, they'd find that he's not the homophobe that his stereotype suggests.

Yes, Congratulations to Rush. Fourth times a charm.

It's amazing what a woman will do for financial security though, isn't it? I can't imagine having to consummate that union.

The EMP is what happens if a 13 year old wins a billion dollars in a lottery and gets to "get back all the all bullies" through architecture.

Women who marry older (repulsive) men for money are characterized as gold diggers, but society would definitely more viciously deride men who do the same, because, not only are they gold diggers, they're also too weak/stupid/lazy to earn the money themselves. Women are still given tacit permission to be layabouts; men aren't.

Keshmeshi, I think that's true, that "society would definitely more viciously deride men" who would golddig a much older unattractive woman but I don't think that's the main reason guys wouldn't do it. I think most guys just wouldn't be willing to make the cushy-lifestyle-for-sex-with-gnarly-old-woman tradeoff.

I like the EMP. Maybe in the near future they can smooth the outside like what was done to the Bean in Chicago. I'm not too crazy for the silver used as on a cloudy day it blends withe the concrete to much.

What would the Shakers, who built some of the finest architecture in America, think of EMP (or for that matter, anything else by Gehry)? Frippery writ large, evidence of a soulless consumer society seeking thrills rather than transcendence. And I would agree with them.
