Happy National Doughnut Day

Per our awesome intern Matthew Bathan (and Wikipedia), National Doughnut Day:

• Is celebrated on the first Friday in June of every year.

• Began as a fundraiser in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to benefit the needy and the women who served doughnuts, pies, and coffee in huts "that could serve baked goods, provide writing supplies and stamps, and provide a clothes-mending service" during WWI. These huts were located throughout France and were staffed by about 250 Salvation Army volunteers. Donuts were the treat of choice because of their popularity and the ease with which they were made (as opposed to baking cookies on-site). (Fun fact: Making doughnuts was the idea of two Salvation Army volunteers, Margaret Sheldon and Helen Purviance.)

Also:

• Merriam-Webster deems "donut" simply a variant of the more appropriately spelled "doughnut."

Would you like to celebrate with a free (mini-) doughnut? Sure you would.

That must be why the LATimes Food section has a series of articles on home-made doughnuts this week, with a bunch of recipes including French crullers. Yum!

But since I hate the mess of frying, maybe I'll just make the frostings: chocolate glaze, maple brown butter...

@7, for some reason a link for the Maple Brown Butter Glaze that was in the print edition doesn't show up in any of the other recipes. If you're interested, it's here:

@8: Too late. Know what's weird? I followed the buttermilk donut recipe to the letter, even keeping a thermometer in the oil so I could be sure it was hot enough, and they didn't cook all the way through. The donuts weren't too thick, but I didn't leave them in for as long as the recipe called for because they were starting to burn.

So I could have had burnt donuts that were cooked all the way through, or un-burnt donuts that weren't. I went for the latter. I think I might just leave this donut making business to the professionals.
