Another Gay Couple Arrested

Posted by on Wed, Jun 2, 2010 at 8:21 AM

This time it's Pakistan. The couple denies it was a wedding, authorities insist they have proof.

Malik Muhammad Iqbal is a man. Rani was born a man but lives as a woman. Both are locked up in a northwest Pakistani jail awaiting trial because police say they tried to get married. In Pakistan, that's a crime. "Whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal," says the country's penal code, "shall be punished with imprisonment."

Eighteen-year-old Rani says Iqbal, a 42-year-old fertilizer dealer, is a friend—not a lover. "We were only celebrating my birthday," Rani said.

But prosecutors say it was a marriage that was taking place. Police smashed their way in, broke up the party, arrested 43 dancing guests, Rani and Iqbal. Iqbal says he was just another guest at the party. "This was not a gay marriage," he said. "These are just false allegations." Peshawar police Chief Shoukat Ali disagrees. Officials say they have photographs and a wedding dress to prove it.

You would think authorities in Pakistan would have more important things to worry about.

What could possibly be more important than protecting people from people who have carnal intercourse against the order of nature?

oh, well maybe protecting them from bombs...and guns...and religious fanatics in general...and starvation...and.......

But after all that definitely protecting people from people who have carnal intercourse against the order of nature?

@2 Are you referring to the "nature" on this particular planet? If so, you may want to check your facts:

"Homosexual behavior is not only common, but even more common in other species than in humans. While numbers are hard to come by, there are a few that present some interesting patterns. In ostriches, male homosexuality is much more common than bisexuality, but among mule deer, bisexuality is more common than homosexuality. Among our closest living relatives, the bonobo chimpanzees, few if any are either exclusively heterosexual or homosexual. Indeed, all that have been observed are exclusively permanently bisexual."

If by "against the order of nature" you were, in fact, talking about religion, try to remember that the "religious fanatics" you mentioned sound a lot like you, and therefore weaken your argument.

LOL, maybe I needed to put quotes around that line to be clearer that I was just quoting the original article. I thought it was already clear enough but I must have been wrong. They are the ones who said "carnal intercourse against the order of nature". Personally I think homosexuality is perfectly natural and couldn't care less what 2 consenting adults do with each other.

Rape (usually Gang Rape...), Incest, Cannabalism, and Poo Flinging are also very common, in fact endemic, among other species of animals.

If homosexual marriage is legalized will we also legalize Rape, Incest and Cannabalism? (Poo Flinging is not illegal, actually...)

Swans mate for life.
Do we have to outlaw divorce?
Someone needs to tell Dan so he can shut the fuck up about non-monogamy....

Actually, poo flinging would likely be charged as assault. The others will never be legalized because they are not actions between consenting adults. That's the key. Consenting adults. None of the other things you mention involve consenting adults. Why can't you people get that through your thick skulls?

so, what- the swans mated for life are kidnaped?

And incest can occur between consenting adults.

And usually the victims of canabalism don't complain much.

And if rape is Normal and Natural maybe folks will just have to get used to it.....

@5

Actually we have a lot to learn from animal behaviors.
Or maybe not.

We should emulate alpha male behavior.
Beat the shit out of the lower males.
Ass rape them just to make sure they get the message.

In fact, nations should learn to emulate Normal Natural animal kingdom behavior.

We'll start with you, Canada.

We want your oil.
While we're there to get it we'll rape your buttugly women.
If you don't like it we'll kill you but we'll be happy to let you off with a good beating if you cooperate.

would next Tuesday be a convenient time for us to drop by?

I realize that other cultures handle this differently, but I'm really uncomfortable with labeling them as gay. One of them is a woman. This is transgender oppression, and should be talked about as such.

@18 I get the desire to clarify, but really -- can't we just call it all queer oppression or something? Spending precious energy trying to clarify what each culture calls things makes our focus on challenging each other, rather than challenging the oppressive structure that we should be focused on.

OOH! OOH! [insert further chimpanzee noises]
I know why the trolls hate the "oh, perfectly natural" argument! It's because they all know that they wouldn't last ten minutes in the wild!

But shouldn't law enforcement in NORTHWEST PAKISTAN be more about maintaining order and keeping the Taliban out?

Venomlash, you should know by now that the lack of opposable thumbs makes it hard for them to use the spell-check, much less manage the punctuation.

@18 and 20: I kind of agree with you both. While by far the biggest point is that this is oppressive and unjust, queer seems like it would be a better term - less misleading and doesn't render the trans angle of this story invisible.
