The Morning News

Posted by on Sat, May 29, 2010 at 9:08 AM

Posted by news intern Lara Phillips.

Three strikes (of the match), you're out: After his seventh arson conviction, Greenwood arsonist gets 30 years in prison.

Good news from Africa: Jailed gay couple in Malawi pardoned and are about to be released, probably as result of UK and US pressure and threats to curtail foreign aid.

Or Governor Jindal could call in an exorcist: Day 40 of oil leak, and day two of seeing if the "Top Kill" plan to plug hole is working.

Whoops: Report says remote operators of predator drones accidentally killed 23 Afghani civilians by mis-identifying insurgent activity.

And we lived happily ever after in an economic utopia: House passes bills to extend unemployment benefits and eliminate tax breaks for hedge funds.

No girls allowed: Non-mainstream Catholic-esque organization ordains Olympia woman as state's first female priest, despite excommunications from Vatican likely to result.

Yum! Raw milk from Whatcom County dairy may be responsible for two cases of E. coli infection.

Eyjafjallajökull 2: Hot lava boogaloo: Two volcanos, Pacaya in Guatemala, and Tungurahua in Ecuador, have erupted and are causing thousands to flee.

Soon to be the name of a metal band: British suspect in deaths of multiple prostitutes dubs himself the "Crossbow cannibal".

I'm not watching if Montenegro isn't participating: The latest victim of the European financial crisis is the annual Eurovision song contest.

What you talkin' about, Broadway? Death of Gary Coleman means content changes for Tony award winning musical "Avenue Q".

Good on Malawi for that little bit of sanity.

I respect Madonna for... well, christ, she did something major. Big kudos to her. And Secretary Clinton.

greenwood arsonist is schizophrenic - how is 30 years in jail going to rehabilitate him?

@2: He'll die in jail. That's "treatment" for most problematic people in this state.

I love the way the biggest news story of the day doesn't even get mentioned. Maybe you're hoping you can ignore it and it will go away. That's right, Joe Sestak. And you had better get used to hearing the name, because this is going to be a big deal.

Shit, my little sisters live right next to Tungurahua. I can't get any calls through.

If 23 innocent American men, women, and children were blown to pieces and burned alive by our military, I suspect Fifty-Two-Eighty would have a different "biggest news story of the day" and Slog wouldn't bury the tragedy with the rather disgustingly casual snark of "Whoops."

dnt trust me 7
@4 you think it will be a big deal? Rahm Emanuel seems to be a better bargaining scumbag than his old buddy Blagojevich.
Anyway, thanks for the tip. It figures Slog wouldn't want us to know.

ah fuck, we all know about the Sestak offer. it's only a story because the RW has no shame. they're making it a story because that's what they do - harp on Obama without ceasing. but this is how politics has always worked, and who fucking cares besides Specter, anyway?

@4: Yeah, except no crime occured, Reagan had done this, Cheney had done this, EVER PRESIDENT HAS DONE THIS, and Sestak is being bitter and trying to play both the Dems and the Teapartiers.

But yeah, okay, let's listen to conservatives whine because we don't get enough of that.

Watch out for older brother Jimmy's friends!

Canada rails against "Little Girl Parties" !

The older organizers of these parties use Facebook to attend young middle school girls between the ages of 12 and 13. At the party, the girls are plied with alcohol in the hope that they'll engage in sexual acts.

[...]

The parties are not just creepy, they could also lead to criminal charges. With the age of consent set at 16 years of age, and the girls involved in these parties far younger than that, those older boys who engages in sex at one of the parties could face rape charges.

The President yesterday "[did] hereby proclaim June 2010 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. I call upon all Americans to observe this month by fighting prejudice and discrimination in their own lives and everywhere it exists."

@3, Swalwell had been ordered to take to state-provided meds and go into mental health treatment facilities but refused them. He's committed dozens and dozens of felonies over a period of decades. He's not the victim here. He needs locking up, period.
