Kids These Days

Posted by on Tue, May 25, 2010 at 3:59 PM

Back when I was a teenager, we hunted down werewolves and murdered them. Now these damned kids are wearing tails and running around in packs:

It's nice to see an alternative to goth culture finally pop up, though. The goth yin has needed a yang for far too long.

Pretty sure I saw one crossing the street one morning a week or two ago in Greenwood. I noted her long foxlike tail in my tweet about it.

Don't get me wrong, it's ballsy to go that far doing your own thing. And the mom at the end has totally the right perspective.

But man, so dumb.

Goth has given way to furries. Check out a lycanthrope, otherkin or therian website if you want to learn more. Stay tuned for teenagers peeing on your mailbox under the full moon. Of course, for my initiation into a subculture, I would much rather drink some blood than eat a turd like a real wolf.

Some teen with a tail like this comes into my work periodically. He is tragically and hilariously awkward.

Actually, @12, it's a very busy news day in the rest of the wide world. Nobody at the Strangler seems to have noticed that, though. (I can't imagine why.)

Good Lord. There goes our future. We're leaving (what will be left of) the world in these kids' hands? I really hope I'm gone before then or that our generation wipes this rock out. Or else they OD on something illegal and "Darwin" themselves out of the world before they can breed, enter politics, vote, or influence the generation after them.

@15,

Isn't that eerily reminiscent of Principal Vernon's concerns right after he lays into John Bender for asking if he knew whether Barry Manilow raided his closet?

It's not just the kids, parents are forming their own animal packs as well:

Your costume group isn't news. I'll bet your dads are sooooo proud. Goths & Juggalos are fine. Werewolves should only be out during the full moon. A Full Moon. The only silver bullets I'll be stocking up on is Coors Light.

That kid is lucky to have a mom with that perspective.

Half human half wolf? We all have "something else" in us? Don't these kids have a class on what the fuck DNA is?

If it's all this tame, then who cares, really? And I'm sure they'll all be environmentally conscious adults.

@25. True that.

My older sister and I bought my little sister a fox-eared hat off of a website and she almost never takes it off, even in high school. When we got her a tail from the local Renaissance Festival a year later, she was ecstatic. She's planning on working in Wildlife Services Management or something like that when she graduates.

As for people picking on her, she just beats them up. ;)

This was a pretty positive and understanding way to cover this story. They could have demonized or sensationalized which is actually pretty normal teen behavior. In ten years these kids will mock themselves, we don't need to do it for them.
