Maybe the Democrats realized that this shit was hopeless?

The only religious outreach should be to grab the religious and throw them into an oven.

Wait, did I type that out loud?

Ooh, so, just like the Dems backed away from ending DADT and DOMA, and backed away from reforming Justice, they've backed away from this reform.

Yeah, this is great.

They have to differentiate between reaching out to people who believe in god(s) but are also realistic and reasonable in secular matters and reaching out to evangelicals and fanatics.

With the former, it's worth reaching out to them and trying to get their vote. With the latter, it's a waste of time... it's like trying to court the votes of the mentally insane.

could we please stop condemning ALL religions and just concentrate on the problem - that being the 3 MONOTHEISMS?

i don't see much trouble being caused by the buddhists or the wiccans.

I have mixed feelings about this.

On the one hand, "outreach" is another word for "pandering" and it makes me sick to see it, so good riddance. And any sort of demographic pandering is bad enough, but religious pandering in particular is just vile. It's a disservice to everyone.

On the other hand, I don't like the idea of handing uncontested control of religion as a political weapon back over to the Republicans, either.

@4 re those ever-cuddly buddhists: You might check in with ethnic Tamils living in Sri Lanka about them.

@4: And Hinduism hasn't been blameless in the continuing conflict between Hindus and Muslims in the Indian Subcontinent. (But to its credit, Hinduism is a lot less hung up about sex...)

Religion is like the internet; neutral, powerful, and maleable- influenced by culture, money, rhetoric, social ties and propoganda. It's nice to have a home team. When the home team takes the championship it doesn't mean you're winning.

Don't forget that:
-- the Republicans threw out slavery with the help of fervent, progressive Christians.
-- the Democrats threw out Jim Crow with the help of fervent, progressive Christians.

Let's not get tied up in identities and definitions. Consolidated power is dangerous, period. Social progress/regress occurs when we tie the personal fate of the ambitious to either the fate of the weak or the fears of the powerful. It is silly to quibble over window dressing.
