Rally Today for Canadian Targeted for Politics

Posted by on Sat, May 22, 2010 at 10:25 AM

Below is the first sentence of a press release issued by the DEA in 2005, praising the bust of Canadian magazine publisher Marc Emery and hindering the movement to legalize marijuana:

The full press release from DEA administrator Karen Tandy boasts, "Drug legalization advocates now have one less pot of money to rely on."

Emery was alleged to have run a marijuana seed company out of British Columbia—which isn't a crime in Canada—but because some sales allegedly went to the US, and moreover, because he was a political opponent of the DEA, he was targeted for arrest. Five years later, Emery is being extradited to the US—to a hearing in Seattle—where he faces five years in prison.

He is expected to plea guilty at Seattle's federal courthouse on Monday.

Today, there's a rally for Emery in downtown Seattle at the Jackson Federal Building (Second Avenue and Madison Street) 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. As the organizers put it, "Emery is a political prisoner of the United States Drug war and it is wrong for the government of Canada to extradite one of their citizens for something that is not a crime in Canada. There are currently other pot seed sellers who are operating with impunity in the country." Folks are rallying to free Marc Emery in cities across the country, but ours is important—the trial is in Seattle. More info is here.

Running a seed company shouldn't be a crime, certainly not a five-year-in-prison crime, and the US shouldn't conduct foreign witch hunts for activists who disagree with bad US policy.

I'm not sure if I remember this correctly, since I was a teenager when he was arrested, but AFAIK, the RCMP wanted to arrest him for something, but couldn't get him for anything (or maybe a few minor charges) - he was antagonistic and pushed limits, but he was always careful not to do things that would land him with a serious criminal charge.
I thought the DEA had been working *with* the RCMP to get him, but I could be wrong.

Under Canadian law, he owes a $200 fine. He's always paid Canadian taxes on his business (stating clearly on his forms that he owned a mairjuana seed selling business), and the gov't happily received taxes off his very lucrative business. This is ridiculous, and I'm glad that there are people south of the border who are protesting this as much as those of us north of the border.

Will you be putting notices at the bottom of your signs that say "No Minors" or do you SLOG pedos promote drugs to underage teens?

@1,

He's sort of douchey. I think marijuana should be legalized but the way he comes off makes it hard to feel sympathy for him or the cause. I don't think I can work up all that much outrage about his 5 years. With his unpleasant personality, he's lucky he got some kind of plea deal and won't be facing a jury, because I can see them throwing the book at him just on the basis of his bad attitude.

"Of course I inhaled, that was the point" - Obame

How much you wanna bet Obama smoked weed that was created in part by Mark Emery? So in this country, we're locking away a pot "dealer" who possibly was responsible for getting Obama stoned (probably far fetched, but we should probably ask Obama to be sure). I laughed so hard at that "now they're going to have less pot money, haha we win". I could easily go buy several pounds of marijuana and not even flinch. Putting Mark Emery in jail does one, and only one, thing: put Mark Emery in jail, and to everyone else on the outside? We will continue in the exact same existence, just without Mark Emery. Except for the guys/gals who replace him, or at least mimic what he does. Where there is a demand, capitalism will meet it.
