Weekend Calendar: No Stuff, Free Stuff, Cheap Stuff

FRIDAY:

Today, Duane Elgin, an author pimping the idea of "Voluntary Simplicity" in his book of the same name, will give a talk called "From the Rat Race to the Human Race" at Town Hall. Take a drink every time he says "sustainable." (Town Hall, 1119 Eighth Avenue, 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., $10.)

Starbucks gives you free tickets to Seattle events for the next five Fridays, because they love you. No, really, the promotion is called "We-love-you Fridays." Today they only love you enough to offer free Mariners tickets, but upcoming Fridays include tickets to SIFF, SAM, the Seattle Aquarium, and more. (Get to participating Starbucks stores after 2:00 p.m. and be one of the first 100 people in line, free.)

SATURDAY:

The LGBT Rally for Equality on the Job will advocate for passing the federal Employee Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) and repealing the military’s “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” (DADT) policy. (Westlake Plaza, 4th and Pine, noon to 2:00 p.m.)

Despite what that voluntary simplicity guy told you, you really do need more stuff. Go get it at the neighborhood garage and rummage sale in Phinney Ridge. (Phinney Ridge, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.)

There are possibly more exciting things to do on Saturday night in Renton besides learning about the upcoming local Judicial Races, but this event includes "light supper"! The King County Democratic Central Committee Annual Judicial Forum will feed you AND introduce you to candidates who have declared for the August primary. (Renton Carpenters Hall, 231 Burnett Avenue North, 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., $10 suggested donation.)

SUNDAY:

Microcredit guru (and Nobel Peace Prize winner!) Muhammad Yunus speaks on "Business with a Conscience." Since micro-lending has yet to fail horribly like mortgage lending, this might actually be sorta uplifting for an economics lecture. (Town Hall, 1119 Eighth Avenue, 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., $5.)

Yunus is just Mother Theresa part II: widely celebrated for 'helping people' by those who have know direct knowledge of what he does, largely despised by those he is supposedly helping.

Grameen Bank is a cash cow for those involved and he is the most hated man in Bangladesh, the nation's loanshark/saint, a modern day Wackford Squeers.

There's an interesting New Yorker piece on the economic testing of economic assistance, and how micro-lending may not be as keen as we all hoped. Check it out.

There are pros and cons to microcredit, just like anything else.
