Stocks: Down. The Dow fell below 10,000 again.

What Now for Financial Reform? The reform bill passed the Senate, but can they save it from lobbyists?

It's Alive! ALIVE! Scientists create first synthetic bacteria.

This Won't End Well: South Korea says North Korea will "pay" for sinking warship.

Germany to the Rescue? German lawmakers approve a contribution to a nearly $1 trillion European bailout package.

He's Like a Male Sarah Palin, Only Dumber: Rand Paul calls Obama's criticism of BP "un-American."

You're Doing the Military-Industrial Complex Wrong: Defense Secretary Robert Gates says he wants the president to veto the defense spending bill if funding for certain projects is included.

Blood on Your iPod: It's the eighth suicide this year at Foxconn, the world's biggest electronics manufacturer.

Observe and Report: SPD is opening another investigation to determine whether members of their department tried to influence Q13 into not running the "Mexican piss" video.

This Is Why I Hate Sports Writing: Wait a minute, you guys...could the greatest Husky of all time be...A GIRL? (Cue Ka-BOING! noise.) No way! She's so cute! And not a burly man at all!

This Is Why I Hate the Seattle Times Sometimes: It's Bike to Work Day...be careful or you will DIE in these MULTIPLE DANGER ZONES ALL AROUND SEATTLE. NEVER MIND THE BIKE! IT'S A DEATH TRAP!

You're going to sit there and tell me it wouldn't be amazing for the greatest athlete in UW history to be a woman? Compare the amount of male athelets vs the amount of female athletes that have gone through that university and you'll find a huge difference in sample size. Statistically, both on and off the field she's an anomaly.

Can someone explain how the Foxconn suicide meme is interesting? It's sad, sure, but...

Foxconn employs 420,000 people in Shenzhen alone: http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2010-…

China's suicide rate is 13.9 per year per 100,000 people: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cou…

You'd expect Foxconn to have 55 suicides a year in Shenzhen, assuming employees are representative of the Chinese population. Which they're not, but surely a rate of 8 in 5 months (19/year) isn't wildly out of line with what statistics would predict, right? It is sad, and I'm sure work conditions contribute, but why the sudden interest in this one company when it has to be more or less representative?

Or am I missing something?

The richest local story I saw this morning is from the P-I's Levi Pulkkinen. Describing newly released charging documents, the story combines lack of late-night Eastside bus service; a 14-year-old boy getting a molester arrested by walking him down I-405; and that, since the judge couldn't find a way to hold him, the accused has been free since this happened in July of last year.

Darn good story. The kid seems cooler under pressure than I'll ever be.

@5 - wow. That's one impressive kid.

Not that Mr. Child Porn isn't creepy or anything, but I keep noticing how, with suspected child pornographers and terrorists, they keep mentioning that when investigators search the suspect's stuff, they always find "a laptop computer." ooooooo, scary...

Rand Paul, uber tea bagger, puts foot firmly in mouth, daily. Just like tea baggers, dumb as a bag of rocks.

"And I think it's part of this sort of blame-game society in the sense that it's always got to be somebody's fault instead of the fact that maybe sometimes accidents happen," Paul said.

Fine, call it an accident. (That doesn't seem to be the case, but whatever.) But that doesn't mean that the guys who own the thing shouldn't be the ones paying the bill to clean it.

I want to know why that woman is limited to playing softball. She's throwing that fucking grapefruit 71 mph. That woman should be in the bigs, just like her little brother is. Why do we make women play softball again? someone remind me.

Why isn't Slog covering the BP oil spill, much?
(How about a call to boycott BP, at the very least?)

Good information on the spill can be found at www.nola.com

I am not going to discount this woman's athletic ability as it certainly eclipses mine but in the bigs? Sure. I would bet guys like Joe Mauer and Albert Pujols would be drooling all over themselves to face her however many times a year.
