The Morning News: Pollution, Draw Mohammed Day, and Rand Paul

Posted by on Thu, May 20, 2010 at 7:50 AM

Immigration Debate Begins Anew: Michelle Obama accidentally gets sucked into the immigration debate, even as Mexican President Calderon, in a visit to the US, calls Arizona's new laws discriminatory.

Happy Monthiversary, Oil Spill! You look very mature for your age. Now go away.

It's Draw Mohammed Day: And the Seattle-area creator of Draw Mohammed Day disavows Draw Mohammed Day.

I Can't Remember What Good Financial News Feels Like Anymore: Unemployment unexpectedly increased last month, and stocks are down today.

Dioxi-wamish: Areas around the Duwamish have elevated dioxin levels.

Are There Grassy Knolls in the Ocean? North Korea says they didn't sink South Korean warship.

All Over but the Fear and Uncertainty: As order returns after the Thai riots, people are unsure about what's going to happen next.

You've Got Me On My Knees: Powerful Cyclone Laila comes ashore in India.

Come On and Take a Free Ride: Is the Downtown Ride Free Area about to go kaput?

How Conservative Is Rand Paul? He's so conservative, Dick Cheney's afraid of him. And, as the press takes a closer look at him, we find that he's against pesky government involvement like the Americans with Disabilities Act (he calls it an "overreach" on the part of the government) and the Civil Rights Act.

I'm Not Into Pointing Fingers, but It Had to be George Clooney: A masked thief stole five paintings, including a Matisse and a Picasso, from the Paris Museum of Modern Art.

Look! A Sports Headline: Some fixie-riding bike guy says he took steroids, says other bike-riding hipsters take steroids, too.

And now, your Daily (vintage) Muppet:

I assume it would a grassy atoll.

Or these days, an oily atoll.

Seriously, I'm not the least surprised by the Rand Paul issue. Conservatives consistently vote against their own self interest. Just like tax breaks for the rich. They honestly believe they will one day enjoy those very tax breaks, yet never face the reality that the uber-rich have no intentions of sharing the stage with us common peasants.

Big surprise Rand Paul is a racist. This just proves what people have been saying; Tea Baggers are racist. And he wants to get rid of the Departmenrt of Education, et al. This guy embodies everything that is wrong with the Republican Party. He has an irrational view of America and the world. And Kentucky is the perfect place for this guy to pop up his ugly head.

@3 I don't think he's a racist, per se. I think he's an idiot who didn't think through the logical reasonable consequences of his extremist views. His assertion that gun carry laws would also need to apply to public accommodations is a complete red herring and is a separate argument for another time. This discussion is about his views on nondiscrimination and civil rights laws.

And now that he's being called on his views, he's unprepared for the intensity of the spotlight, and I doubt he'll get lots of support from the Republican establishment after his supporters shit all over that candidate.

Where is our Lance Armstrong groupie, proclaiming his total innocence, even when another pile of first hand evidence is dumped on his chemically-enhanced head?
Walks like a duck, talks like a duck, but flies like a supersonic jet? Probably eating more than tadpoles in the pond.

I was a member of that Everybody Draw Mohammed facebook group for a while, but I found that when the group would post something, the comments were alarmingly racist. Many of those who "liked" it were taking it as an anti-muslim group. I "disavowed it" (unliked it) myself.

@5: Who cares about Lance? The real story here is how Floyd adamantly declared his innocence, accepted donations from people who believed in him, wrote a whole book about how innocent he was, and is now going down in flames. His allegations, all of which may very well be true given the rampant doping in cycling, carry no weight, as he's lost all credibility.

His behavior really is bizarre, and he's clearly mentally unbalanced.

Please get rid of the free ride zone. You know what else slows down buses? The inevitable transient who pretends to search his pockets for a fare before the bus driver lets him go without paying.

@7 Agreed. Floyd Landis is a POS. His behaviour since his tainted TdF win has been all over the place. He threw as many people under the bus as he could find, and came up with ridiculous excuses for positive tests.

However, Lance has been the only big fish in cycling, as far as the non-cycling world cares, for a decade. It's brazenly obvious to those that know about performance enhancement that he has been a super juicer, and a lot of people have spent much effort to out him for it. Any mention of Lance Armstrong in conjunction with doping will be the item highlighted by the MSM.

Landis may have little credibility, but when his story corroborates with those told by dozens of others in the cycling world, it gets a bit truthier. When you add it all up, you come to the conclusion that all of the top riders are heavily juiced, and therefore a guy with one testicle could not blow them away by 20% margins.
