Comic Sans Is a Cancer: City of Seattle Edition

Posted by on Fri, Apr 30, 2010 at 3:13 PM

I have written in the past about Seattle Parks and Recreation's continuing love affair with Comic Sans MS font in press releases, especially in releases that come from Ms. Joelle Hammerstad.

Well, it's gotten worse, and the Comic Sans seems to keep spreading: News intern Lara Phillips discovered this logo on a real, live, public Seattle.gov webpage:

Make it stop. Please, please, make it stop. I predict that at this rate, by the end of 2010, the entire City of Seattle website will be in Comic Sans MS.

Of all the things to criticize the city government for, font choice is still near the bottom of the list.

That said, Comic Sans is still dumb for anything that isn't, you know, a comic.

Please don't insult all other logos by calling this a logo.

Bad font, worse logo, worsest acronym.

I dare you to try to get a city ordinance passed to ban the use of Comic Sans in any official city publication.

A handy flowchart on deciding whether or not to use Comic Sans:

I think the slog readers should take contructive criticism more literally like @6. Contest to make least worse alternative. get to it!

"Last updated 12/05/00".

Still pretty fucking lame even for 2000. Some neighborhood boob probably spent ten hours in MS Paint doing that.

Oh, and by the way, my brand-new Questionland t-shirt, which The Stranger sent me, has Comic Sans on it.

I refuse to believe that's an actual logo. It has to be an amalgam of bad graphic design cliches created as an example of what not to do. It has to be.

Don't worry.

We'll always be free of Comic Sans tyranny in Fremont.

the whole comic sans/papyrus joke was dead a few years ago. designers no longer care.

@13, maybe you don't, but my designer friends and I talk about our hatred of Papyrus and Comic Sans at least once a week because PEOPLE ARE STILL USING THEM! GAHHHH!!!!!

@20, Fnarf, that's not Comic Sans on the Questionland materials, it's ITC Kristen, but point taken.

Possibly worse than the font itself is the lack of anti-aliasing.

@13 The jaggies! My eyes!

Also I am wondering why there is a webmaster link on that page. Why the hell would you want people to know you made that.

@15, you ever try to anti-alias by hand in MS Paint?

Can we save a little hate for the travesty that is Algerian?
Posted by Fnarf http://www.facebook.com/fnarf on April 30, 2010 at 6:03 PM
Mary P. Traverse 22
@21 Yes. Also Mistral. (Most of my font hatred comes from people over-using a so-so font to the point it becomes intolerable, which is how I feel about Papyrus. Comic Sans, on the other hand, is just a terrible font.)

Maybe because some Seattle city officials are clueless comics?

@5 nice flowchart. For me almost any font that resembles/fakes chalk board or marker writings or kid scribbles is horrendous to look at.

"Gah! That's horrible" is a crappy substitute for criticism. I've noticed that these font and type and logo discussions have a lot of "Gah!" and very little reasoning, argument, example, and counterexample.
