Think I'll Wait a Bit Before I Put That Diamond-Encrusted Ring on Craigslist

Posted by on Thu, Apr 29, 2010 at 4:54 PM

Jesus.

A 43-year-old man was shot to death Wednesday night by robbers who came to the door of the victim's Edgewood home, according to the Pierce County Sheriff's Office. Deputies said the man may have been shot when he intervened as his 14-year-old son was being pistol-whipped.

Troyer said deputies are looking for three men and a woman who went to the home of James Sanders Wednesday night because an expensive diamond ring had been advertised for sale on the Internet classified website Craigslist.

Good thing he didn't have a gun in the house. A robber could have gotten hurt!

This is why you don't sell merchandise on the internet or in the paper and then agree to meet at a private residence. Charles Ng and Leonard Lake answered various newspaper ads looking for victims. They murdered the entire Dubs family after answering a classified ad that the husband placed to sell photography equipment.

This is why you meet in neutral places with people met online, such as: book store cafes, coffee shops, mall food courts, etc. Make sure there are plenty of people around to avoid issues like this. Never invite strangers from the internet to your home.

This sucks and it's too bad we can't expect better treatment from others, but we can't. As other Slog commenters have stated... public meeting. I met a friend by selling him a game console over the internet and now I trust him implicitly, but we met at McDonald's the first time. And other public places a few times after that, even.

Totally WILL NOT do Craigslist to sell things anymore since I advertised some shelves (not parking-lot portable) and some guy showed up with his eyes darting around the house like meth-amped gerbils - he definitely wasn't there for the shelves, and when he left and didn't come back, I felt like I'd dodged a bullet. Holy crap. I'm so sad for that son, utterly horrible.

Wouldn't it be cool if one of those crooks who advertise phony deals on expensive stuff, intending to lure and rob buyers, ran an ad that was answered by crooks who intended to steal it and beat up the sellers, and they each gangbanged the other out of existence?

thats awful. but i once put up a fake ad promising IKEA shelving and sex, and got 200 responses in one day. youd be surprised how many people asked about dimensions...of the shelves i mean. ( and i know, i know, fake ads are bad, but come on, would you ACTUALLY beleive a bookshelf/sex ad?)

Craigslist is getting awfully scary, between the unhinged lunatics in rants & raves, the violent pimps in the erotic services section, and now these guys.

I liked the Internet better when the scariest thing you'd find was an unexpected image of a man stretching his anus.

One more reason never to put your address/location on the internet. I'm doubting I'll make another post there anytime soon.

Very sad and frightening.

If you are considering selling jewelry on craigslist, MEET AT A BANK. your bank preferably.

If the "buyer" doesn't like, it don't sell.

This happens so rarely it's news. It's like a plane crash. Hardly ever happens so it's news when it does. Please stop fear-mongering. And yes, try to conduct large cash transactions in public.

I knew without a doubt that the killers would be blacks, and I was right, like always.

Fully half the murders in Seattle in 2008 and 2009 were committed by black males. Blacks of all ages and sexes make up only 8% of Seattle's population.
