MobyLives introduces us to the hot new internet webcomic that's sweeping the nation: Great Gatsbys

Screen_shot_2010-04-27_at_11.55.30_AM.png

Read the whole series. Reminds me of R. Sikoryak's recent book Masterpiece Comics, which is a must-read if you like literature.

Kate Beaton (the artist there) has a ton of awesome comics. A lot about history, Canadian and otherwise, but there's more lit stuff in there too... http://harkavagrant.com/

Reminds me a little of Dale Beran's new thing, Nerds of Paradise, and particularly Richmond Virginia in Must I?

Also, if you want to read the whole thing at its source (hint, Paul), it's here: http://www.harkavagrant.com/index.php?id…

Kate was just in town for the Comicon. Regretting that I didn't pay the 20-or-whatever bucks to meet my internet crush. She is magic!

What Abby said, Paul. If you (yes you) aren't familiar with her unquestionable genius, take a couple hours and get fanned up. She's the bees' knees!

What? She's new? She's been awesome for MONTHS now. Come on! I love how she's managed to snag nerdy lit, science, and history fans alike.

Kate Beaton is awesome. Particularly her strips on the Brontes.

Like what everybody else said: Kate Beaton is awesome; you should change that link so that it points directly to her site, http://www.harkavagrant.com.

I've met Kate Beaton a few times at comic/zine fests. I probably gushed like a schoolboy when I told her how much I like her work. At the Stumptown Comics Fest this weekend in Portland I stood in a packed room while she gave a talk and everyone crushed on her, even though she is remarkably humble and down to earth. Seriously Paul, you need familiarize yourself with her work and join the fawning mass of her admirers.

Also, her Livejournal, which has the added benefit of including her musings:

I understand that Kate is going to be in the New Yorker soon. I met her at Stumptown and gave her one of my comics and she could have put her foot on my neck if she had wanted to do that.

Wow. There were so many things incorrect about this post that I thought it had to be a joke. Kate Beaton's been around for years. She's a published cartoonist.
Also: you had to pay $20 to see her? Pfft. Shoulda come down to Stumptown where it was $6 to get inside and no line to wait in to talk to her.

BOAT!

Kate Beaton forever. And uh, Paul, you're really, really late to this party. Kate's been around for years. Then again, she's Canadian. It takes a while for good stuff to make it south of the border.

Her style is instantly recognizable by a Nova Scotia mile. Her work is brilliance (but don't let that go to her head!)

Masterpiece Comics is sublime stuff. From the first pages of Dagwood and Blondie and Dithers as Adam and Eve and God, I was enthralled. It has the best version of Wuthering Heights imaginable as well, as a Tales From the Crypt story. I relished every page.

It's available at the Seattle Public Library as well, so it's worth adding to your request queue.

Come to TCAF (Toronto Comics and Arts Festival) to meet her next month! It's totally free.

She did a Penny Arcade guest strip recently too.
