Man Robbed at Machete-Point Next to Lake Union

Posted by on Thu, Apr 22, 2010 at 2:26 PM

On April 17, at around 1:00 a.m., a man demonstrated that chivalry’s not dead when he protected his girlfriend from four men, one of who was wielding a machete, in the parking lot of the China Harbor Club on Westlake Avenue, according to a Seattle police report.

The man was walking his girlfriend to her car in the restaurant parking lot, police records say, when four men approached and told him to “give them all his money.”

One of the suspects then allegedly pulled out a machete. At the sight of the blade, the victim ordered his girlfriend to get the hell out of Dodge. She drove away, stranding her boyfriend with the four men. The victim tried to walk away from the group, later telling police he was “afraid that he was going to get stabbed or shot.” According to the police report, the man holding the machete blocked his path and demanded money again. The victim gave him $20. The machete man demanded more dough.

We can kill you right now. We can do whatever we want with you," one of the suspects allegedly told the victim. The victim gave the suspects another $20. He then told the group of men that he was out of money, jumped into his car, which was parked nearby, and drove away while calling 9-1-1.

Officers positively identified and arrested the alleged machete-wielding suspect, who was still in the China Harbor Club parking lot. The police report notes that the suspect appeared to be drunk or on drugs.

Will Tim Burgess sponsor legislation to raise taxes that will be earmarked exclusively for more police officers, to deal with the fact that Seattle is now a completely out of control because of rampaging machete gangs and aggressive panhandlers?

This is somehow the work of the Guatemalan used-book gang, though the report ominously does not mention how many quality pre-owned hardbacks were involved here.

Where are all of the right-wing open (or for that matter concealed) carry gun advocates when you need them?

I walked past that location on Sunday afternoon.

It's time to strip search all the rich people with houseboats and yachts to make our citizens safe!

Good God, the China Harbor! This joint is just up the street from the office and has always been kind of a mystery. How does it survive? It sure as shit isn't the food. I've always imagined that they bring in kilos of pure blow that they deliver via submarine to China Harbor's underwater bunker on Lake Union. It'd explain how they stay in businesses.

Laugh all you want, but my first thought when I read this was "you would never read a news story like this here in Denver." Way too many people here have concealed carry permits for anybody to even think about pulling a stunt like this.

There were four dudes there you Rambos

I too am a fan of concealed carry but you don't take on 4 guys in close quarters when you have more than just yourself to protect

Naw, you don't have to take out four guys. Just the shithead with the machete. The other three will beat feet.

you're assuming the other 3 were also unarmed, just because they didn't show doesn't mean they weren't

They may or may not have been "armed," but if they had anything more imposing than a machete, it's probably safe to assume they would have used that.

Besides, it's kind of bad form to take someone out if you can't see a weapon. Juries sorta frown on that.

Why didn't he just bend down and flap his arms clucking like a chicken while alternately yelling "Pancakes!" Works every time.

@16-21,

Not to get all NRA/Gary Kleck or anything, but the presence of a gun in the hands of someone who is reasonably trained and willing to use it generally puts a quick stop to incidents like this without anyone getting shot. But I'm with 5280 in thinking that if the machete guy had been shot, the others would have dispersed toot sweet.

@22,

I guess that's part of why 5280 packs....

"how does the China Harbor survive"

actually, I've been at six office parties there for three different workplaces, and some job interviews and birthday parties as well. It never feels full, but people seem to like it, and it can have a sexy vibe sometimes.

Another non-right wing concealed carry permit holder chiming in to say I that I would have drawn down on the machete guy, greased anyone that made a move toward me, and called 911 while they all ran away.

These days I'm carrying more and more often.
