Organized Crime and Books: It Gets Worse

Yesterday, we learned about Seattle's Guatemalan Book Dealer Gang epidemic. Today, awesome Slog tipper Adrianne wants us to know about an organized crime book connection to the north of us, in Victoria.

From The Globe and Mail:

Vancouver Island bibliophiles beware: That unassuming elderly gentleman browsing through the bookshelves next to you could be one of America’s most wanted criminals.

Several Greater Victoria booksellers confirmed Monday that FBI agents have visited their stores in the past week and asked staff to be on the lookout for 80-year-old James J. (Whitey) Bulger, a known book lover and former Boston mobster with a long list of brutal crimes on his rap sheet.

If you don't know about Whitey Bulger, you should read up; it's fascinating stuff. Adrianne also points that Bulger was the basis for Jack Nicholson's character in The Departed.

Could there be a connection between Whitey Bulger and the Guatemalan Book Dealer Gangs? Seems likely! This case keeps getting juicier.

The best thing about Whitey Bulger is that his brother Billy was the head of the Mass State Senate for many years. They don't make families like that one any more.

For more insights into the world of the Bulgers, read all of George V. Higgins.

The Bulger brothers' story is a gift that keeps on giving. I'm definitely going to read Higgins. Thanks to fnarf for the heads up!

Oh sure they do, Fnarf. You should check out the Ciccilini family in Rhode Island. (One of them is mayor of Providence, the rest are, shall we say, "connected.")

Ah, I miss the East Coast.
