The Daily Show Helps Bring Armed Americans out of the Closet

Posted by on Tue, Apr 13, 2010 at 8:00 AM

I'd call this required viewing but "required" carries a whiff of unpleasant duty and this video brings nothing but pleasure.

Yes they all pretty much have the same body type. I notice the clip didn't show them doing open carry at the gym or while jogging.

I'm not one who has a terrible problem with open-gun laws or the people who take advantage of them. It takes a certain degree of irrational fear to see someone with a gun on their hip and think that they are any form of threat to you.

But that certainly doesn't mean that I need to be friendly to someone with a gun, or respect him, or make him feel accepted.

Don't waste your time. This one isn't even in the top 20 of Wyatt Cenac's best work.

Wyatt Cenac helped director Barry Jenkins strike some beautiful notes in "Medicine for Melancholy" - I hope anyone who hasn't seen it yet will find a way.

@2, greater argument aside, I think that seeing a gun strapped to a random person's side means knowing that person has the ability to instantly kill me if they so desire, which isn't mostly the case with non-armed people. It doesn't mean they're going to, but I don't think one would need to have "irrational fear" to be uneasy.

I think that guy in the video is gay.

I must be turning into a wingnut.
Every time I watch the Daily Show these days I find myself thinking "That's not fair!"

Dudes with guns -- they trend old, and they trend rural/suburban. Hence the lack of hawt abs.

Also, lots of people have the ability to kill you instantly. Unarmed people can too; just ask my buddy who does jujitsu. Guns are dangerous, but if you're open-carrying in a local coffeeshop, chances are you're a gun nut with ideals, not a criminal.

I'm not a huge fan of open carry, but I don't really care strongly about it either... I can't decide if it's better than concealed carry or not.

The weird thing is (according to a gun nut friend) some places are dandy with open carry but not concealed, and others are fairly laid back about concealed but open carry is unacceptable.
