Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood: Ugly Swedish Babies and a "Good Kid"

Today’s neighborhood blog roundup by news intern Erika Broad

Hello, Neighbor!
  • "Hello, Neighbor!"
To celebrate its 100th anniversary, Swedish Hospitasl is giving prizes to the "cutest baby born at Swedish," reports My Ballard. If you hate babies and love bats, and have a few extra bucks to donate, help save the Woodland Park Zoo’s Nocturnal House from being a casualty of the economic downturn here. Just do it soon: Wedgwood View reports that the zoo has been offered a $20,000 challenge grant that if matched by May 1 will help save the creatures of the night. And Central District News reports a different kind of animal news: A suspected backyard dog-fighting ring on Martin Luther King Jr. Way South was busted yesterday. The caller who reported the suspicious activity also saw a dog "near death" chained in the backyard a few days ago.

Police may have put a stop to the sudden spike in Capitol Hill robberies. Last night, after three more late-night gunpoint robberies on the Hill, police arrested two teenage suspects. In other violent-teen news, the 14-year-old who beat the Metro bus driver unconscious was sentenced today to a year in juvenile custody. According to West Seattle Blog, while on the stand in court today, the mother of the attacker insisted her son is “a good kid” and could “never hit anyone” and started to blame the victim for what happened until she was cut off by the judge. The good kid was reportedly "under the influence of alcohol" at the time. And in one last piece of macabre neighborhood news, West Seattle Blog reports that a cyclist called 911 at 5:45 a.m. yesterday out of concern for a man laying face-down in the alcove of the art collective in West Seattle’s Junction. The man was later pronounced dead; cause of death and identity are still unknown.

Regarding that "good" 14 year old who's headed for juvie... Look no further than mom for an explanation of the kid's personality.
