Best Summary of Prom Controversy

Posted by on Wed, Apr 7, 2010 at 8:01 AM

Assholes:

Here’s the news, from a source I view as extremely reliable. The prom the school district promised at the country club in Fulton was a ruse. Only seven kids, Constance, and her date showed, and at the same time, everyone else held a “real” prom at a secret location out in the county.

This is all after the school district had represented to Judge Davidson that Constance was invited to a parent-sponsored prom to be held at Tupelo Furniture Market. The school represented that Constance was invited in court filings, testimony, and representations by the school district and its lawyers. In reality, Constance had not been invited, but, based on the representations by the district and its counsel, Judge Davidson denied Constance’s request for a preliminary injunction that she could go to the prom.

The school reneged, or possibly didn’t ever intend to follow through on its representations to the court. The parents didn’t want Constance at the prom and didn’t want to be sued (as they told the Clarion Ledger), and so on Tuesday announced the cancellation of the prom.

But what they’d done was secretly relocated it.

Shortly thereafter, the school’s attorney announced (on Wednesday) that “the prom” was to be held at the Fulton Country Club on Friday. But yet only seven kids showed up.

Meanwhile, there’s a rumor that school officials were directly involved in setting up the “fake” prom.

More here. Photos from the "real" prom at Fire Dog Lake—which has dubbed Fulton "the meanest town in America." Someone—an asshole classmate perhaps? or what passes for a parent in Fulton?—started a Facebook page called "Constance Quit Yer Crying," only to have it backfire on 'em pretty spectacularly. And some of Constance's classmates jumped into the comments thread on this post at FDL to defend themselves—only to have their asses handed to them. (Thanks to Slog tipper Lynda.)

Over on JoeMyGod's insanely long Constance thread, they had at least one student and one parent jump into the comments as well.

Needless to say they didn't last very long.

You know, I grew up on the Gulf Coast, and this whole episode is so reminiscent of the civil rights era that I can only shake my head. The whole mean-spirited, just-those-Nawthun-lihbruls-makin-trouble, we-don't-like-your-kind playbook. Mississippi has learned NOTHING in forty years.

What's funny is that 40 years ago it was TV coverage that shone the light of day on the toads who were brutalizing the marchers. Now it's the internet allowing us to see this played out. God, I love technology.

I love how the students who responded over there basically confirm everything we've been saying:

softballgirl10 wrote: "i don’t understand the disabled kids stuff, we don’t even talk to them, so stop judging. they could have come to our prom if they wanted to."

softballgirl10 wrote: "just because something is legal doesn’t make it right. like i said she won anyway she got her prom."

Apparently softballgirl10 is “Megan Johnson,” and she and her friends made shirts that said things like, “I’m straight, so sue me,” and, “No prom, thanks Constance,” and wore them to school.

begleg10 aka Lindsey Begley wrote: "The party we had in Evergreen . . . is 30 mins away from the school. we rented out the community center, hired vendors, decorated, and our parents ran the security/chaperone staff- but it wasn’t prom. Prom was at the country club where constance and 7 other students were."

begleg10 aka Lindsey Begley wrote: "What people are failing to realize is that much of the fault of this whole stink lies with Constance . . . We let her have her prom with her girlfriend and her tuxedo and we went to party it up in the “boondocks” not because we wanted her rights violated, but so we could salvage what has turned into a total fiasco."

begleg10 aka Lindsey Begley wrote: "I’m sure it sounds like we faked her out, but understand this- the decision NOT to attend prom had nothing to do with the school or with Constance’s sexual preferences; it had everything to do with proving we weren’t going to let her and the ACLU steamroll us into doing what Constance wanted. We flexed the muscle of the majority and we’ll suffer the consequences."

Dan perhaps doesn't understand,
or more likely doesn't care,
that the standard response
to being called an Asshole is Fuck You.
Fuck You and
Fuck your ACLU Lawyer and
Fuck your ACLU Mandated Prom.

Constance only had one request of Dan.

She didn't ask for $30,000.
She didn't ask for half a million "friends".

She asked Dan to be respectful.

It wasn't a lot to ask.

But it was too much.

Constance has more class and maturity
than Dan and the
half million Hate Machine "friends"
will ever have.

Constance deserves better "friends"....

I'm kind of curious about the seven kids who went to prom with Constance. Were they not told about the other one, or did they go to the "real" one to stand up for her? Either way, if anyone wants to start a scholarship fund for those kids, I'd donate.

I am kind of stunned by the reification of "My-Senior-Year." What is this about? I don't remember anything like that going on back in 1713 when I graduated from Sammamish HS. Is senior year the high point of these kids' lives? Is this it for them? Nothing interesting or cool in the future? Jesus, creepy-o-rama.

Most telling thing contained within the bounds of this post: None of the photos of the kids at the Backfire Camp real-fake Prom showed faces.

That's the message of the day.

Try to oppress our brothers and sisters, friends and neighbors, and YOU'RE the ones who get to hide.

You're one of THEM, meaning the boys in the white sheets. And just like Them, while you have a right to whatever fucked-up opinion you want, expressing it in public means you must hide your face. Either before or after.

This is why the Deep South is such a shithole, culturally, politically and economically- they drive people out instead of drawing people in. Why do you think business, art, and learning gravitate to the big city? Because those are the places where creative, interesting, and productive people can be themselves and achieve their potential. The socially toxic environment created by these intolerant hicks is stifling to all the things that human beings thrive on.

In bouncing around the Facebook friends lists of people who identify with having gone to that school, I came across the FB account of the charmingly named "Danny Raper" who "is so happy!" right now (and it looks like his prom date is now his girlfriend.)

He posted this to his wall, "Danny Raper is wonderin why fulton high school has to compromise...if its such a big deal then why dont the ACLU throw their own prom?"

I was thinking about writing a long reply about discrimination and "compromise" and how badly this school has let these kids down...when I saw in HIS friends list that he has either a sister or a cousin named Chastity Raper.

Her name is Chastity Raper.

And the ludicrousness of life wins out over all.

Graduate, Constance...then leave...and never look back.

Not because they've earned the right to live their lives without you...but because they deserve nothing more than what they've got, and you deserve all that the world has to offer...

For what its worth, I noticed that on one of the published facebook pages full of hate (you can see them at Lafiga), one parent at least stood up for common sense, asking "why not just give her a ticket" to the private prom, and noting that the prom was only four hours, the kids spent more time than that in school with Constance everyday, and "why give her more reasons to fight?"

It seems no one paid attention to that parent, sadly for everyone concerned. If they had done so and prom had went off without a hitch, Constance would not have needed to continue the court action, particularly if the school board agreed to abide by the law in the future.

I noticed that they were especially critical of the fact that she insisted on her basic rights as a student: one of her classmates called it a "crazy-reckless need for attention". So it can be assumed that a person in Fulton who was concerned about their right to personal safety might be considered only borderline narcissistic. Miss Lindsey Begley's diagnostic criteria might suffer a blow if she ever ventured out of her playpen into the real world, I'm guessing.

The "she's attention-crazed" argument is so lame. It's like calling Rosa Parks "uppity". If you're being oppressed, you only have two choices -- call attention to it in hopes of changing it for others, or back down and let it go away. The easier choice is the second. No one craves the kind of attention Constance is getting from her classmates; it's the unfortunate biprodic of being couragous in a bigoted place.

@37:

You're assuming of course that any of these kids besides Constance will even be going on to college.

My guess is that, as of right now, roughly 10% of the girls who went to the "private party" are already experiencing the first twinges of morning sickness, and about 50% of the boys are glumly filling out applications for non-existent jobs at the local tool-and-die factory.

Most of these kids, in fact I would venture to guess nearly all of them, are going to stay right where they are - in the middle of fucking nowhere Mississippi - for the remainder of their sad little lives, sucking pork rinds and swilling Budweiser until they eventually die of some form of cancer or diabetes-related malady. But, they'll always have the "Victory of 2010" to remember, which they'll cling to like a cherished heirloom, simply because it will represent the only time they ever came even remotely close to anything resembling fame.

Meanwhile, Constance will move away and graduate summa cum laude with a degree in Political Science. She'll marry a nice girl who works as a PD in the Cook County City Attorney's Office, settle down in Joliet, and eventually be appointed Secretary of Health and Human Services.

And every time her former classmates see her on their 90" 3-D flatscreens propped against one wall of their single-wides, their souls will blacken and curdle just a tiny bit more...

I was writing letters about these actions preventing these kids from getting into college until I checked, and you are right--they are not really "higher education" material. One of the meaner of the mean girls had her Facebook page public longer than all of the others. She is "in a relationship" with a boy who graduated earlier and is at the local community college, which seems to be the best any of these kids can hope for.

They are clearly uneducated now, and seem to have no hope or plans to gain any true education in the future. So I imagine they'll just become their myopic parents, claim the Christian high ground while acting so very ant-Christian, and when they come of age, vote Teabagger.

Should I continue to despise them for being despicable, or pity them for blissfully wallowing in their willful ignorance.

Ever notice the thread that runs through the bigots' attempts to defend themselves (like lindsey's and the other kids') is this idea of "we're just minding our own business, and now the (ACLU, liberals, you name it) are trying to force their will on us." ? It's like they just can't distinguish between passive withdrawal and active exclusion. Like shutting someone out of a prom is the equivalent of one person choosing a single friend to hang out with. It's some weird form of conservative denial - very similar to the teabaggers' wanting to shut down the health care bill because it was being "rammed down their throats." The fact that people were DYING from lack of health insurance was irrelevant because it wasn't them or their friends. At the moment. God these people are stupid.

@51: You must have misunderstood him. I think he was saying that the better things in America just do not come from the South. Which is true for the most part. If you look at my source, you'll see that the Atlantic South is where most migrants are going. Which is funny, since that's the part of the South that's the most like the North; urbanized, economically strong (relatively speaking), and generally more progressive than the more rural areas.
See how the inland/Gulf part of the South is second only to the Mountain West in how little it's built up? http://cleantechlawandbusiness.com/clean…
So okay, it makes sense that people would be moving out of the Mid-Atlantic. One, it's fairly crowded there, and real estate prices are often obnoxiously high. Two, if you're in the Mid-Atlantic, you're either in Jersey or near Jersey. But when people leave the Mid-Atlantic, you know what part of the South they live in? The part that is lowest in racist backwater hicks.

As for majority bowing to the minority...god you're dumb. No matter how small a minority is, they have the same rights as everyone else. And there is no right in the constitution that says you have the right to not be "distracted" by those who are different than you. You and your argument fail.

I hate to acknowledge the unregistered trolls, but 58's comment is just too perfect to pass up. Listen, you moron, and anyone else who thinks they agree: It was not Constance's "ideals" that wanted to go to prom - it was Constance herself, with her date. Real, actual human beings. Possibly very annoying ones, granted, but real nonetheless.

You social conservatrons are always doing this - saying you're just standing up for your God- and Constitution-granted freedoms to disagree with modern liberal viewpoints when you deny freedoms, rights, recognitions etc. to people you don't like. That's bullshit. They're people, not arguments, you asshole. Actual, pulse-having, feelings-possessing humans, not walking embodiments of some secular liberal ideology. Unless you can demonstrate they've actually done something wrong - i.e., harmful to others, you have no basis for treating them differently from anyone else.

I know it's probably pointless, but just maybe that's simple enough for you to understand.

And I think is Constance can, she should move. I was born in Mississippi, but was raised in S. Carolina. There were some nice people, but the idiocy and bigotry was astounding. I couldn't wait to leave. I'll never forget my mother telling me that the worst tip she ever got working at Sonic in Miss. was a card from the KKK. No cash, just some lousy KKK invitation. @60, 62: Yeah, I agree totally. But Alleged makes this point on every fucking board. It's literally, like, his only opinion. I think he has a grand total of one opinion: that liberals are hypocrites for disagreeing with conservative intolerance.

It not only makes no sense to anyone with half a brain, it's also endlessly circular; still, he keeps making it, because, well, the only way anyone can even remotely try to defend injustice against gays this late in the game is to argue that no one should ever believe their opinion is "right." But, yeah (you noticed!), that is itself an opinion Alleged thinks is "right." So he's a hypocrite too then, I guess? But thinking he's a hypocrite is also having an opinion, which then makes you a hypocrite...

It's so childish in stupid it's never really worth discussing. I sometimes think he's joking, and this is a sophistic trick by someone in the Buddhist community to break down our ego. But they're tremendously more effective, so I doubt that too.

So yeah, you probably still don't have it simple enough to understand. It's okay though; no one ever will.

She cant go to air conditioner school, she's too fat to fit thru an air-duct or a crawl-space or a toolbelt. You Liberals make me laugh---you are all so ignorant, your excuses you make for gay selves are as stupid and absurd as ever.
