Jailbreak Your iPad

Posted by on Mon, Apr 5, 2010 at 5:57 PM

Some nerds (not Anthony Hecht) have already jailbroken their iPads. If you are a nerd*, you can watch this video, in which some anonymous nerd logs into his iPad and makes a map disappear.

The iPad has only been on sale for less than three days, and already hackers have jailbroken it to get around Apple’s restrictions.

MuscleNerd, a member of the iPhone Dev Team committed to hacking the iPhone OS, has jailbroken the iPad after just a day of tinkering. The hack gave him root access to the iPad and allowed him to install non-approved applications and to run apps simultaneously. It uses the same exploit employed to jailbreak the current OS 3.1.3 iPhone.

*Video extremely uninformative to non-nerds.

How do you know I haven't jailbroken my iPad, smarty?

Apple products are designed specifically for people who don't really know computer operating systems that well and don't want to. Apple products are neither designed nor marketed towards actual nerds, just hipsters who pretend they're nerds.

If you want an OS that gives you total liberty to mess with its functioning, there are PLENTY of much cheaper, and even free, options out there.

@5 -Yes, I think the people you're referring to are known as "computer users." Weird that they'd target that demographic.

Of course, Apple's operating systems are all based on Unix, so they do offer all of that flexibility, but with an extremely polished UI on top.

@5....Hmmm. There's an interesting tale of raw numbers vs. percents here. Given the sheer dominance of Wintel users, there are more "nerds" in that camp, but the percent is probably quite small.

Although the numbers of folks using those cheaper/free (mostly Unix based) OS options is tiny, the percent of nerds approaches 100%.

Apple/Mac users fall somewhere in between. I recommend Macs for folks who, as you say, "don't really know computer operating systems that well and don't want to."

But the percent of Mac users who are nerdly and actually understand their OS is far higher than in the Wintel world. I'll bet the percent of Windows users who actually know what BIOS is less than 1%. Just think of the millions upon millions of office workers (let alone hundreds of millions of other users) who never do more than boot up their machines, read email, use the Web, and read the occasional Word doc.

It does my heart good to see that terminal window on the home screen.

The easy way to jailbreak is to not buy one.

Isn't the BIOS what's left after you reduce wood (Bois) to it's constituent chemicals?

That reminds me, has anyone bought a wood trim iPad yet?
