Today in Steve Scher's Brain

Posted by on Fri, Apr 2, 2010 at 9:42 AM

This morning on KUOW's Weekday, Steve Scher and state attorney general Rob McKenna discussed the legal precedents for releasing the signatures to Referendum 71. McKenna brought up the precedent set by the Supreme Court's ban on cameras in the courtroom during the Proposition 8 trial. Scher was confused:

Scher: Prop 8 was the immigration law?

McKenna: Prop 8 is the constitutional amendment in California banning same sex marriage.

Scher: Oh, oh, it’s that one.

McKenna: Yeah, that’s a big deal down there, as you can imagine.

They've moved on to McKenna's attack on health care reform now. Tune in if you can put up with Scher's inanity.

Why does KUOW continue to allow Scher to emit his odiferous mouth-turds when they clearly have other, far more competent interviewers on staff?

these commenters are very lame. they admit they don't know the law yet they comment on it. someone needs to spice up this talk, it's too boring and sober, but that's what you get with these so called informed commenters.

Recently I made a contribution to KUOW during the pledge drive with this message attached:

I am avid public radio listener and supporter, this is my first time giving to KUOW. The reason I have never contributed before now is because I don't understand why Steve Scher has a show. I cannot listen to him and it drives me crazy that 2 full hours of radio is dedicated to his inane drivel and spew of nonsense. I understand the need for local programming, however I feel that KUOW ignores great shows such as Talk of the Nation and Fresh Air or even the Diane Rehm Show - each of which features TERRIFIC interviewers. Please accept my humble gift to your station as a notion that providing better programming would inspire bigger donations. Thank you.

They thanked me for my honesty in their response...

To be fair, the Supreme Court ruling on Prop 187 was much more high profile. Steve Sher has actually grown on me a little bit, as long as he's not talking about gardening.

@4 Isn't having Steve Scher grow on you a bit like growing comfortable with an abusive relationship? Or is it more like an ugly but benign fungus you just can't figure out how to get rid of?

I used to not mind Steve Scher much. He was a bland but functional interviewer. But whether because of the constant complaints on Slog or a recent decline on his part, he now annoys the fuck out of me. He was out sick a couple weeks ago and the woman filling in for him--I can't remember her name, maybe Marcy something?--was much better. They should just make her the permanent host and encourage Steve to seek retirement.

I equate Scher to Columbo; a bumbling, grandfatherly, figure who eventually sniffs out the truth.

But Columbo really doesn't work as radio. There are only so many awkward questions you're willing to put up with before flipping to (an equally awkward) John in the Morning.

You know, if you add a Republicant five finger salute to Prop 8 you get Prop 13.

Repeal that one.

#7 I'm glad John in the Morning annoys someone else, too.

All these comments about Sher, and nobody mentions the off-handed "as you can imagine" remark by McKenna?
