In Response to the Question

If artists don't support the Chihuly Museum, why haven't they formed an anti page on Facebook?

Well, they have.

It's called Anybody But Chihuly at the Needle (ABC at the Needle). It went up yesterday and has 401 fans already.

Anyone care to make a bet Jen and the rest of the Stranger staff all show up on opening night to snag some free food and drinks?

Of course not.

They'll be there, just like they were at the evil Hard Rock Cafe.

Nontroversy sells, right Jen?

Oddly it doesn't come up when doing autocomplete on facebook search, you have to do a full search.

I thought it was about not wanting to give up "open space". Or is it just because "artists" don't like Chihuly? Make up your minds.

I popped up the "invite" list for the FB group and brought up my artist list and almost everyone on that list had already joined.

Yeah, that's a lot of artists.

400 people? Wow what overwhelming opposition!

Artists are the most petty people imaginable and hate anyone who "sells out".

Maybe I'm just incredibly ignorant, but after seeing this "Chihuly" thing on Slog for the last few weeks and having no fucking clue what it was, I finally googled it.
Um, they want to make an entire museum dedicated to one guy? That seems sort of odd...
(PS. I obviously know nothing of Chihuly. Was he some kind of super-amazing-mind-blowingly-fantastic artist? I didn't notice anything "I-have-my-own-museum" worthy of his work online...)

Don't get me wrong, it's really good... but, you know...

I think some commenters don't know about Chihuly's business practices. He has the employees do most of the design and all of the glass blowing and takes credit for everything, he has also tried unsuccesfully to sue former employees for copying his work (ideas that THEY came up with BTW). Chihuly is like wal-mart for artists, these artists that don't like him are not simply just being "petty".

Even if Slog wasn't covering this - and uncovering the "glastroturfing", the footage from the meeting the other night with people spouting over the top praise for Chihily should have been a tip-off that the meeting was loaded with ringers and shills for the project.

Before I was sort of on the fence about it, leaning toward being against it, now I'm firmly in the camp against it.

Anybody but Chihuly? Like Thomas Kinkade? 'Cause that'd be awesome. Maybe I'll start a Facebook group...
