Dave Ross and Businesses Pledge Money to Help Rescue 4th of July Fireworks Show

Posted by on Thu, Apr 1, 2010 at 10:25 AM

KIRO news radio host Dave Ross is running an impromptu pledge drive to fund a 4th of July fireworks show over Lake Union, which the production company, One Reel, announced last night was canceled due to a lack of sponsorship. The station is 97.3 FM.

Ross announced on his show this morning that Tom Douglas pledged $5,000 towards the 4th of July fireworks show over Lake Union, which prompted Ross to pledge $1,000 of his own money. Show producer Libby Denkmann says that Charlie's Produce has just pledged another $10,000. Denkmann says they are setting up an online form now for other businesses to pledge.

One Reel spokeswoman Mikhael Williams told me last night past years' primary sponsors contributed “at least $500,000" and a similar commitment would be expected this year to put on the show.

I'll update when I hear more about how a business can pledge money and how many businesses have done it. Needless to say, if Seattle comes together to put on this fireworks show, that would be, well, just heartwarmingly awesome. Stay tuned.

UPDATE: KIRO has posted a page where you can pledge money and lists all the pledges so far here. The show has raised about $25,000 in pledges so far.

UPDATE 2: One Reel spokeswoman Mikhael Williams says that if the public comes up with $500,000 by Monday—but doesn’t expect too much in return—the show could go on. “If there are a certain number of people who can come forward who want to pledge from the goodness of their heart to make sure the event come together and don’t have expectations that normally are associated with title sponsorship—like promotional materials and marketing materials—if they just want to do this to ensure that Seattle has a fireworks show and they can come up with the $500,000 by Monday, we would love it.”

Williams says One Reel would get in touch with the city to secure the permit and suppliers to make sure the event’s infrastructure—porta potties, generators, fireworks, etc.—can be secured. But, she says, “the window is closing.”

Do public disclosure laws apply to One Reel??? It would be interesting to see who turned them down.

Hello, Microsoft, Boeing, Nintendo, Vulcan etc., etc.

The Peoples' fireworks show shall go on without the interference of the capitalist killjoys, comrade! Hooray for Seattle, and its people!

I think the fireworks in Nelson BC, which are far better than anything I've ever seen in Seattle, cost maybe $1000 and are put on by the local Kiwanis and Shriners.

$500,000?

Why?

The $5000 is all we need. The rest just distracts from it.

One Reel sucks. Whatever happened to Summer Nights at the Pier? Or Friday at Bumbershoot? Everything they touch turns to poop. Did they run the Sonics too?

STFU, Will, you cannot do synchronized fireworks with shaped charges for $1000. A bunch of drunk elderly frats shooting mortars from empty beer cans does not make a good fireworks show. Do you ever shut up?

But, if they charged $10 to get into Gas Works, and then sent people around to collect donations from everyone watching around the lake while it was going on, I'm sure they could $500k. How many hundreds of thousands of people crowded around the lake last year? Compare that to the average donation collected during an event like the Solstice Parade where they pass the hat.

@ 8) Producing an event for 100,000 people is extremely expensive. Porta poties, generators, security staff, extra traffic cops, the fireworks and crew, insurance--my god, I can hardly fathom the price of insurance if you want to shoot FIRE BOMBS OVER A CITY--add up really, really fast. And One Reel would need to use Gasworks park as a place for folks to congregate. Perhaps the event can be produced for less money, but I'd guess not much less.

Will is full of shit, obviously. The price of the powder alone proves that. I've put on a fireworks show for $1,000, at an undisclosed location, and while it was pretty cool, it sure as hell didn't resemble Seattle's. There's a bit of a difference between 50 foot high mortars and 1000 foot ones.

@8 - don't need it.

@12 - I stand by my statement. I've seen fireworks in Paris, in Nice, and in all 50 states and 9 provinces.

Get rid of the beer gardens, the security, and get back to the basics.

Nobody will mind.

by the way, it's up to 80k in donations now.

Way more than needed for the permit and the fireworks - everything else is gravy.

Will, the hole in my dick has more credibility than you. All fifty states, huh? SURE you have. All nine provinces, you say? RIIIIIGHT.
