Comment on the Chihuly Museum Tonight

Posted by on Thu, Apr 1, 2010 at 3:40 PM

Tonight at 6:30 p.m., the public will have a second chance to comment on the proposed Chihuly Museum slated for the Seattle Center's Fun Forest site. The City Council's Parks and Seattle Center committee, chaired by Sally Bagshaw, is holding a regular meeting tonight at 5:30 p.m. in Seattle Center conference room A (upstairs).

Because so many people signed up to comment on the Chihuly Museum on Tuesday night, and many left without having a chance to speak, Bagshaw has extended public comment to tonight's meeting—after the regular business agenda (which her office tells me will run for an hour, approximately). There will be three separate sign up sheets for the meeting: One pro-museum, one con-museum, and one relating to other business on the agenda.

Bagshaw's office also reports that since Tuesday, their office alone has received an additional 180 comments from the public—still holding at 90 percent against the Chihuly Museum. So if you have something to say, show up, sign up, and get it said.

Just so long as this joke of a "museum" gets buried in the resulting hole, @1.

@1, I don't live in the area but it's clear to me the gophers have been active underground for some time and busily stacking the deck, to mix a metaphor. Seems to me that if most locals don't approve, pretty much any rabble-rousing goes, in order to raise an effective countervailing force.

I kinda like Chihuly (Oooo! Sparkly!), but my taste is all in my tongue and I lack long-term exposure to the PNW echo chamber, so I lean toward what the outraged mob has been frothing--and they have been raising cogent objections despite the froth and fury.

Seriously, what is with the massively short notices on this large public project? Announce this shit ahead of time so that people can plan attending.

So you, a supposedly impartial reporter, spoke at the meeting tonight (Thursday) in protest of this project?

In the spirit of fairness you demand from museum officials, you should recuse yourself from reporting on this topic as you are not impartial. It really makes me question your version of the "facts."

If you are knowingly misconstruing information because of your personal bias, then you are a shitty reporter and the Stranger should do better. Further, aren't you libel if you spew a bunch of horseshit? Printing that people were paid to show up Tuesday is a pretty serious accusation, and I haven't read your proof other than that food gift card flap.

Now, I'm sure you are writing your take on the meeting tonight. Is your view that it was once again a stacked meeting? Were those people paid, too? I look forward to you backing up those assertions.

It's not like we're talking about something small like an alleyway vacation ...

Thank you Cienna Madrid for keeping us informed on this and I think its great reporters have opinions and are not robots. If your in the 90% then your in good company with me.

I was at the first meeting and yes you are correct - it was glaringly and sickeningly stacked. I missed out on that gift card but people were "admitting" on and off the microphone they would monitarily benefit. KIRO was there and filmed the whole meeting. Numerous contractors were there suddenly praising Chihuly which I found odd.
Contractors should be sent an open fair bid and not feel that they have to kiss ass for jobs.

So if the City of Seattle were to financially benefit, would the opinion of the citizens of Seattle be discounted?
