Scott Pilgrim Trailer Brings the Sound Effects

Talk of the trailer for Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World has been Twittered and embloggened everywhere. Most internet chatterers seem incredibly pleased with the nerd quotient of the film. It does look pretty close to the comic, which I have recently fallen in love with.

One of the first reactions I have on watching the trailer a couple times: I am interested to see comic book-style sound effects employed on a movie screen, almost 50 years after the Batman TV show. Comics readers have winced for the last three decades about newspaper headlines like "POW! BANG! BOOM! Comics Aren't Just for Kids Anymore!" It'll be interesting to see if PowBangBoom Chic takes off as part of a retro fanboy revival. You can at least trust that the adaptation is in good hands: It's directed by Edgar Wright, the director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz*. And it looks like Michael Cera gets the shit beaten out of him a lot over the course of the movie, which is a bonus.

* Hot Fuzz was totally underrated. It was not quite as good as Shaun of the Dead, but it was still pretty goddamned funny.

I had previously said that KICK-ASS would be comic book film of the year, even over Iron Man 2, but I have renounced: It's now Scott Pilgrim's world, and we only live in it.

Amazing books, looks like an amazing trailer. And Edgar Wright is the fucking bob-omb.

Also, Hot Fuzz > Shawn.

I had been ambivalent about this movie, but this trailer has sold me on it. I'm super-excited now.

I'm been meaning to read the Pilgrim books; they look great, but this trailer makes the movie look like a real migraine-inducer. Was the campy "COMIC! BOOK! MOVIE!" zing, pow, blam stuff just some idiot marketing guy's idea for the ad campaign, or is it actually in the movie?

To add insult to injury, there's also less than zero chemistry between Cera and the boring art school chick. I didn't buy that he'd crush that plastic cup for her, never mind fight her ex-boyfriends. Maybe I'm just way too old to be the movie's target audience. I should ask my 12 year old son what he thinks...

I did love Hot Fuzz, though. I didn't realize that movie was underrated...

In the movie. It's a great interpretation of how the comic's reality works.

Anything that Edgar Wright does is genius. Anyone who has seen his movies needs to check out Spaced, the television show he did with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.

And Jessica Stevenson/Hynes...she and Pegg star and wrote the show together, although Frost's great in it.

No way, Hot Fuzz is way better than Shaun of the Dead. Spaced is highly recommended as well, the Kitsap Regional Library has the series on DVD if anyone is over here and wants to see it at no cost.

I am SO over Michael Cera. Seriously. I love nerd boys but that guy just BUGS me.

Hot Fuzz is awesome! If anything is wrong with it, it's that it's about 10 minutes to long. But it's still awesome.

Pros: source material, Edgar Wright, fun design (looks like).

Cons: Michael Cera playing Michael Cera playing Scott Pilgrim. No no no.

@11: I love him and I hate him too. I mean, fuck. It's not bad to stay within your range, but when your range isn't so much a range as ONE NARROWLY DEFINED CHARACTER, oh my God.
