Some Stubborn facts about Israel

Posted by on Fri, Mar 19, 2010 at 9:32 AM

CSM:

Two polls published in Israel today show 41-46 percent of Israelis back the Quartet's call for an Israeli settlement freeze in East Jerusalem — contrary to Netanyahu's claim of a consensus on the issue.
Can this mean that nearly half of the Israeli population is anti-Semitic? And, yes, Obama must be anti-Semetic. But there is good news in the land of the Bible. The number of sane people in Israel is not at all surpassed by the number insane people:
Another 56 percent questioned said they don't believe politicians who call Obama anti-Semitic or hostile to Israel, or who say he is "striving to topple Netanyahu."

On the whole, Obama's popularity may be declining in American public opinion, but a sweeping majority of Israelis think his treatment of this country is friendly and fair.

Peace be with you.

don't care. there is always some excuse why we have to fight some nutso off-mission war in Iraq, Iran, or whereever.

doesn't matter. we're not going to solve their problems until THEY want to solve their problems - on ALL sides.

With all that Isreal owes this country for it's very survival, it sure as hell doesn't give a shit how many American's die fighting wars caused by their disregard for peace. And until we're ready to cut off the gravy train they will continue to take us for granted. And I have no more or less disdain for the Jews than all the other religions that screw up people's minds and kill.

I'm amazed at the (seemingly) abrupt shift in tone towards Israel taken by the U.S. media. When the Mearsheimer paper came out discussing the enormous power of AIPAC, it seemed impossible to find any mainstream criticism of Israel despite a number of policies distasteful to American values (banning Arab political parties, identifying a person as arab or jewish on national ID cards, etc.) Now, it seems the ground has shifted and I'm not sure why. If this Huffington Post entry had appeared a few years ago (http://tinyurl.com/y9kd976) the comments section would have been flooded with aspersions. Again, not sure why this changed.

Israel is like any other developed democracy- there's a sizeable opposition to everything. They tend to elect right-wingers because right-wingers tend to be good at manipulating fear for their own purposes and they do have things to be afraid of.

It's hard for me to judge Israelis, because look what we had as our elected officials, and what they did, with just a hint that an attack might occur? Hopefully, the Israelis are getting sick of it, as we did. But it's hard to say.

Not to worry people not to worry. The Arabs are far too Macho, every one wants to be top dog, for them to get their act together and settle this problem peacefully. Israel has no reason to change its behavior, raise the Holocaust/Anti-Semite call if someone dares suggest Israel is in the wrong. No nation nor the UN will send troops into Israel to ensure equity. Between these two tension points are strung the Palestinians, tortured, flayed, humiliated, killed.

Ahnon @4, I've noticed this shift in opinion too. I was going through the comments on a recent Maureen Dowd column on Netenyahu. And the great majority were along the lines of "The United States has enough to deal with now without getting sucked deeper into the Israel mess by aiding and abetting the Netenyahu government's settlement madness."

There is one American politician I'm extremely disappointed in. I was reading that Anthony Weiner, Democratic Congressman of New York, is a down-the-line AIPAC supporter and called Obama's reaction to the latest settlement announcement a "temper tantrum." If this is true, it's high time Weiner's constituents and a cross-section of American Jews show Weiner what a temper tantrum really is.

The crazies in Israel have political power far disproportionate to their numbers, like another country I could name. They also proudly engage in electoral fraud to get their guys into office, like another country I could name.

HA HA HA HA

I mean, it reminds of Stephen Colberts interview with the REAL socialist candidate and asking him if he thought Obama was a socialist.

Priceless.

@8 - that's because most of their governments are coalition governments and you only need 1 percent of the vote to get seats.

On accusations of anti-Semitism, I would only note a recent cartoon by Mr. Fish.
