So much for not wanting to cause a distraction.

I don't think Ellen has any right to tell the other students how they need to feel about their school and their own beliefs.

Having said that, it's always good to see kids get college money, too bad it's due to this but it's still good.

Damn Ellen for reminding everyone that the SCHOOL BOARD cancelled the prom for everyone. Damn her!

OMG her dad is in the audience. (4:49 - 5:32) He's even cuter in real life.

Loveschild, why is it your right to decide what Ellen's rights are? She has the right to express her opinion. So do you. You're free to criticize Ellen's or anyone else's opinion, but the fact that you think someone else's right to be critical should be taken away says a lot about how you think.

I'm so glad that Constance isn't accepting a big celebrity-sponsored prom. She wants what's right--she wants her school board to back down. And now maybe they will.

Shero!!! Congrats to Constance! This clip makes me so happy! And good on Ellen for defending her so eloquently, and also for acknowledging Constance's incredible courage, when Ellen has not always been so strong. Beautiful. Hallelujah, times are changing.

If I had been sure of raising a person as wonderful as Constance, I would have reproduced. As it is, I feel more confident leaving the world in the hands of people like her.

"I don't think Ellen has any right to tell the other students how they need to feel about their school and their own beliefs."

But she does. Racists were wrong, and we still tell them they are wrong. They are free to be racists but that does not mean it is right. Homophobes are wrong. Now you are free to be a homophobe, and a bigoted piece of trash, but that will never make it right. It is wrong. Period.

Wow! For those who didn't watch the video, Ellen announced tonic.com is giving Constance $30,000 for college! That is AMAZING. I am so happy for her, she deserves it.

Supportive parents of gay kids make me cry like a bitch, every time. I just want to hug them and make them cookies and elect them president of the universe and give them the Nobel Prize for Awesome.

The most positive aspect of this whole deplorable situation is that this girl, having been raised in an obviously homophobic (and probably racist, although that issue hasn't been directly addresse) small town in the deep south STILL has a parent who is 110% supportive of his daughter.

THAT is how progress is made, one small move at a time.

@5 LC,

How do you square your Christian beliefs with your judgmental attitude? I mean, "Judge ye not", right?
