Blogswarming the Speaker of the House for Action on ENDA

Posted by on Thu, Mar 18, 2010 at 11:41 AM

Nancy Pelosi is probably... gee... just a bit busy today. There's an awful lot on her plate. But activists and bloggers—Daily Kos, Open Left, Americablog, Towleroad, Pam's House Blend, Joe My God, Michelangelo Signorile, GoodAsYou, and more—are nevertheless asking their readers to contact the Speaker of the House today to demand action on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA).

Hearings were held last Fall in the House and in the Senate to demonstrate the need for the bill, and testimony was heard on the severe unemployment, underemployment and harassment experienced by LGBT workers. Witnesses testified to the scientific studies demonstrating this.... Various sponsors promised that the bill would move to a vote in August, September, October, and November of 2009. But in order to go to a vote, the bill had to pass through the House Committee on Education and Labor via a "markup" procedure. Markup was finally scheduled for November 18, 2009. But at the last minute, the markup was postponed, and has still not been rescheduled.

It is currently legal in 30 states to fire someone for being gay or lesbian. The president promised action on ENDA and the Democrats who control both houses of Congress promised action on ENDA. Some will say that now is not the time to get in the Speaker of the House's face about ENDA. But there never seems to be a good time for gay rights. LGBT people are sick of being told that our issues have to wait until the day comes when there's nothing on Congress's or the president's plates. That's as good as being told that Congress and the president will never take action on our issues. That's unacceptable. If ENDA is a distraction for Congress—or if DADT is distraction—the only way to end the distraction once and for all is for Congress to pass ENDA and put the bill on the president's desk.

Here's what to do:

Please call Speaker Nancy Pelosi at 202-225-4965. Ask that the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, HR 3017, move to a vote. Please be polite, but firm. After you call, please tell us how the call went by clicking here. If you get a busy signal or hang up, let us know that too.

Here we go again with homosexuals homosexually homosexualizing the agenda of Pelosi.

They're attempting to intimidate her with dire threats of homosexual violence, like giving her a paigeboy, throwing glitter at her church, or bedazzling her dog.

Gee, the last time I tried to call Pelosi, the first question they asked was whether I lived in her district. When I said "no," they hung up on me. That's how it works in Washington, kids.

actually, this particular week would be a good time to just wait a few days. not forever, just till we get that health care thing?

it's not in the bag and it's kind of dumb to get the media off health care and organize on these issues right now and until Sunday. Why not wait till next week? If we pass HCR the Dems are more powerful, too, and more likely to do what we want on equality.

Do we liberals always have to be stupid, tactically?

This week, while you weren't paying attention, the Dems finally pushed thru a Jobs bill, a Health care bill (Sat) and a Finance reform bill.

See, told ya you only need 49 votes plus a VP.

I'm with Dan for once. Guess what's next on the plate after health care reform? Immigration reform. Yeah, they're going to pick *that* scab open, too. So if you wait until there are no big issues on the table...it's never gonna happen.

Oh, Dan, you are such a fucking asshole. Stop defending rich powerful politicians and start defending lgbt people? If Pelosi has a lot on her plate, then she should stop the botox injections and start fucking doing what the Democrats promised to get our votes. STOP ATTACKING GAY RIGHTS PROTESTERS, YOU FUCKING IDIOT! STOP ATTACKING GAY RIGHTS PROTESTERS! What's the matter? Are you too selfish to share the gay celebrity spotlight with people who really make a difference? If you don't like gay people who actually stand up and fight for their rights, then attack the bigots like Nancy Pelosi and HomophObama would support, extend, and maintain discrimination against lgbt people. Dan Savage, STFU!

I say we get someone to introduce a Constitutional Amendment stating no one can discriminate for any gender-related reason including sexual orientation. So nationwide laws would be as follows: Marriage Equality - YES, of course; Adoption Equality - YES, no question; Employment/Insurance Equality - YES, goes without saying; DADT Repealed - YES, automatically. Let's give them something to REALLY sink their teeth into. We can demand it all, right now. One fell swoop. It would be like gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people were actual first-class American Citizens. Imagine.

@Will in Seattle - Thanks, it's not my real name or title, but it is fun to call up the local McDonald's and ask for reservations for a nice table for HRH the Principessa Diannessa.

I like your name too; my oldest kid's got the same name. Well, not the "in Seattle" part.
