  • March 16, 2009: A copy editor works on the last print P-I.

I took this picture almost exactly one year ago, as the old Seattle Post-Intelligencer floated off into oblivion and the new SeattlePI.com was born.

Tomorrow night the new, online-only P-I will be celebrating its one-year-old self at the Crocodile with $1 beers and cupcakes and music by The Lights. How long can the actual lights stay on at Hearst's online-only experiment? It's not making money yet, but Poynter reports that it's getting around 4 million unique visitors a month, and quotes Pat Balles, SeattlePI.com's general manager, as saying, "We are optimistic."

Last week I reported on what some ex-P-I staffers think of the new project. Think they'll let me into the party after all that?

Eli:
If you are really preoccupied about getting into parties, and penning me-centered accounts of being there, you'll find a journalistic home at Publicola.

I hate to burst the bubble, but I'm not sure how much of a party it's going to be. I stuck with the PI - it was a respectable paper for years - and have diligently followed its evolution from big city daily paper to sad, desperate hit magnet.

SeattlePI.com was my web home page for a few years too, at least since Google's been up in the toolbar. But at some point, I got sick of LOLCats headlines and the lack of complex and interesting news analysis.

About three months ago, and perhaps much too late, I switched my home page to SLOG. I'm sure I wasn't the only person who went through this gradual transition "away from print."

@Pretty much, yeah. The PI is sliding in their needed quest for hits, and the Times is a joke most days with their Blethen-fueled poor-man's Fox routine.

I just keep Slog & Publicola feeds at the top of my Google home page.

But to be fair, they do still run some good articles (but that home page is too damn gaudy).
