Hooliganism: Now for Seattleites!

Posted by on Wed, Mar 17, 2010 at 3:57 PM

"The men were wearing their Sounders scarves over their faces as they approached him."

A Portland Timbers fan who thought he got into "friendly rivalry banter with several Sounders fans" after a preseason game last week was beaten by those fans and dragged around the sidewalk, according to police.

The incident happened Thursday about 10:30 p.m., shortly after Portland beat Seattle 1-0. The victim, a 27-year-old man, was bantering with the three Sounders fans near the intersection of Second Avenue South and South Main Street — about two blocks from Qwest Field.

"According to (the victim), the men were wearing their Sounders scarves over their faces as they approached him," Officer Aaron Parker wrote in an incident report, released Wednesday. "He felt one of the men grab onto his scarf and pull it backwards."

The victim grabbed the scarf so it wouldn't be stolen, fell to the ground, "and was punched in the head several times by all three men," according to the report.

Training for the 2016 World Cup takes time, you know.

I want to bring a flare to a sounders match.

Oh, Lord. This Sounders-Timbers shit is ridiculous. They fucking started it, with their "ACES" (Any Club Except Seattle) and the "Keller: Do The Cobain" banner (with pic of shotgun), but it's stupid and needs to stop.

Hmph. Because soccer fans have such a long-standing tradition of being civilized, right?

I'm sitting at an open air mall in east San Diego right now. I just got back from the beach and the zoo. San Diego is like Seattle -- only with year round sun shine. From what I can see, you can rent a 2 bedroom apartment around here for $1200.

I'm not really seeing the advantage of Seattle over San Diego at this point.

Oh, the indignation expressed by the P.I. commenters is just precious. Come on, one incident doesn't mean that we're headed for Brazillian soccer riot territory. "Friendly rival banter" probably means "drunken assholes swearing at each other". It's gonna happen occasionally. The best thing any one of us can do is not contribute to it ourselves.

Fnarf, I highly doubt that it's going to go away anytime soon, particularly since Portland is going to be joining our division in a year's time. It's as stupid and not stupid as any sports rivalry.

wisepunk- March to the Match at night is all I'm going to say.

Our guys should be ashamed, though. 3 on 1 is no way to fight.

And lovely timely usage of the word 'Hooligan'! It's thought to come from the surname 'Houlihan', for a particularly rowdy Irish family living in London around the turn of the previous century...

Lord luv the Irish!

Didn't this guy learn anything from Liverpool FC?

Wait a minute - isn't Savage a Houlihan? That would explain a lot.

I'm with #7
Not saying it was acceptable, but I'm sure the "friendly Banter" wasn't quite as innocent as they are framing it.

@2, @8, I looked long and hard for green flares, but apparently they only have the nautical kind you shoot 300 feet in the air with a gun, which is a little more show than I'm interested in.

I'd be angry too, if I just watched a 90 minute game with only one goal. And was compelled to stand throughout the whole thing. Booo-ring.

@14, yeah, those guys weren't really football fans, they were violence fans. And they're all fat fiftyish old men with bad knees now, peddling their "ooh, I'm hard, really I am" memoirs. Fascinating book, but those days are long past in England.

I absolutely don't agree with assaulting anyone, and I'd be pissed if I or a friend were the victim.

But from a soccer culture perspective, IMHO, this is kind of great.

(Fnarf, if you think MLS isn't about things that are "long past in England," you haven't checked the rosters lately.)

Plus, it's not like we have to be afraid of Portland's retaliation (disdainful hipster shrug?)

@ 16, yeah those were some classy gents, though some of 'em were fat and fifty at the time... I figured you'd know the book and just wanted to give you some ribbing pleasure.
