Religion Quigley Preparatory Seminary

I also attended Quigley Preparatory Seminary in Chicago. People don't believe me when I tell 'em that the priest/gym teacher didn't allow upperclassman to wear trunks to swim class—really—so it's nice to have some backup. But that wasn't the craziest thing about Quigley. This was: there were two young priests in their twenties, both kinda hot, who did nothing all day but spank high school boys. Their official titles/job descriptions: disciplinarians. It was written on the door to their office: disciplinarians. Quigley's disciplinarians would sit in their office all day and wait for other priests to send misbehaving teenage boys down to for a little discipline.

Hate to diminish the feelings of victims, but nude swimming was standard for years before the invention of quick-drying synthetic swimsuits.

I completely fail to see how swimming in the nude is molestation. Adam & Eve were naked until Eve tempted Adam with the apple. So naked is how God originallly planned life to be. And as for the "discplinarians" we had those in public school too. They were called Assistant Principals.

Uh, can we clarify this "not wearing trunks" thing? I initially took that statement to mean that the upperclassman were to wear a different type of swimming attire - perhaps a Speedo?

bella, it was a different time. An astonishingly large fraction of the population wasn't aware anything like homosexuality existed, and it WAS standard for indoor pools to be single sex and no suits worn, since, as mentioned above, materials weren't the same. And it was simply less laundry to do. It's only, oddly, as the culture has become completely sex-saturated that nudity in such settings has become taboo. There was simply less privacy in general back in the days before every kid had his own room. Today it's completely the opposite. Grown men at my adults-only gym go through contortions to change their underwear under a towel lest anyone catch the slightest glimpse of their nether regions.

nobody has ever believed me when i told them that my high school swimming classes were done in the nude - south shore high class of '71 everybody naked except the teacher.. i went to two classes and freaked out so badly that i ditched gym for my entire 4 years - and failed gym all four years because of it...
and before lc's twisted mind gets all bent out of shape she/he/it should know that i passed swimming in my first year at trinity international university ( an evangelical college in the north chicago suburbs ) received an a+ but never learned to swim because the instructor told me it was no use in teaching me because blacks couldn't swim, because our butts were too big. ' that's why you never see colored people swimming in the olympics. they're just naturally better runners'

Dan, were you ever "disciplined" by one or more of the "hot disciplinanarians"? If they were that hot, I would have found a way to be "corrected". Even while not acknowledging my own gayness, I wouldn't have cared about the catholic doctrine on queers, I would just have wanted to be spanked by a hot priest. Teenage hormones, you know.

I was born in '72 (kinda right in the middle of the 64-76 range) and no way would anyone I knew have been swimming naked AT SCHOOL. Skinny dipping in the dark at camp - YES!

Ah, "disciplinarians" at prep school. The notable one at mine was known for his "Iron Finger", which he would use to pound a button into a young man's sternum (lotsa pain and no incriminating bruises!). He was old, and definitely old school. One of the Jesuit 'brothers' talked about being hit with a rubber hose back in his day. Sure glad times have changed.

As @35 noted, nude swimming in schools and YMCAs was common in the 60s, 70s, and earlier, especially in the upper midwest and some other parts of the country. So common that a commenter a while ago in another post described high school intermural competition (MI, MN, WI?) in the nude with the dudes' moms cheering in the stands and chatting casually at poolside. It does become desexualized in the same way as a nude beach--it feel weird for the first few times, but most normal people get used to it such that wearing a suit to go swimming soon seems bizarre to the point of insane.

The point is, the Catholic Church targeted young gay boys as potential priests. The policy of recruiting 14-year-old boys stunted the young boy’s psycho-sexual development, and now they are shocked when adult priests behave like they are 14 year old boys.

Hey so I haven't really read or commented on Slog for almost a year. But here I was today and I thought this was a really interesting little piece of information. Definitely warranted checking out the comment section.

Anyway, I do think it's interesting how the clearly gay men recruited for the priesthood (particularly in the good old USA) have ended up so broken and stunted that they're not even gay for grownups, whereas all the gay-ass nuns I know are shacked up with each other. Someone should really examine this.

I went to a Catholic high school seminary In Queens NY, and the priests lived upstairs! 1/2 of them got busted in the last 5 years but my classmates were telling teachers of abuse 20 yearws ago.

Slightly OT, in the same period when Dan had to swim nude, I was forced to wear a bathing cap simply because I was a girl. I sported very short hair then. Shorter than many boys' hair cuts. I pointed this out countless times. But the public swimming pool enforced the rules that girls needed caps regardless of length, and boys didn't regardless of length.

In my defense, I was a huge dumbass yesterday and fell down a fucking flight of stairs, dislocated my elbow, bruised pretty much the rest of me, fucked up my back, and then immediately got my period combined with a really, really bad cramp (TMI?). So, you know, I've been cranky.
8 months certainly feels like a year. At least, it's been a school year. I feel like that counts for something. Also, I did say almost.

@ 63, fair enough. I'm fairly literal-minded when it comes to expressions of time, so I was curious when you said it had been that long because it really didn't seem so long to me. And because I'm literal minded when it comes to expressions of time, I do perceive a pretty big difference between 8 months and a year. (Although I might have read that November comment so maybe that's why it didn't seem so long.)
