They Don't Mention If They Took Her Kid From Her...

Posted by on Mon, Mar 15, 2010 at 3:42 PM

...but if they haven't, they should.

Donna Simpson, 42, is trying to become the fattest woman on earth. Simpson, who already tips the scales at 600 lbs and wears 7XL dresses is hoping to double her weight in the next 2 years. Simpson holds a Guinness World Record for being the fattest woman to give birth at 532 pounds. It took 30 medics and a high risk cesarean section to deliver Jacqueline. To reach her current goal, Simpson is eating 12,000 calories a day and moves as little as possible. To fund her massive grocery bill, which runs upward of $3,000 a month, she runs a website where men pay to watch her eat fast food.

Don't forget the part about her husband, the enabler. How you could encourage someone you love so much to destroy her health like that is completely beyond me.

It's hard to argue with that, especially considering that theres a high probability that she's probably doing the same to her and thereby endangering the child's health. It's bad enough that she has such total disregard for herself but to think that a child might be suffering from a similar fate is just unconscionable.

I'd think she could gain weight faster and cheaper by using that stuff body builders take... those super high calorie drink powders and mixes? I mean, they're designed specifically to make you gain weight, right? (although it also seems like fast food is designed specifically to make you gain weight too, but I digress).

The original cite was on another obesity story Dan brought up this morning, and the reference to this woman was commented very early in the thread. It really doesn't matter the provenance of the original cite (even if, yeah, I made that comment). Meme and news repetition is a common feature of Slog.

I don't deny that it's gross and horrifying, but I don't see why her kid should be taken from her. We don't take people's kids from them when they smoke, don't wear sunscreen, eat poorly, have unprotected sex with many partners, etc. unless there's evidence of CPS worthy harm to the child.

We can't give good care to the kids currently in the system as is, I'm not behind adding another one because their mom is intentionally obese.

Why, exactly, should she value health over happiness? It seems to me that she is making absolutely the right decisions for her own life.

The only reason she might need to take care of her health would be for the sake of the child. But again, it seems that she and her husband are in a better position to decide what's best for the kid than a bunch of holier-than-thou blog commenters.

@33, she posts pictures/videos of herself and charges a subscription. See @31. She also says she'll accept food and gift certificates from grocery stores.

And @34, what are you talking about? If her self-harm were mutilation or anorexia, there'd be no hesitation that she was hurting herself and that intervention were necessary.

Do you think that she can easily move around the house? That she can easily look after her kid's needs when it probably takes her ten minutes just to get up out of whatever reinforced chair she sits in all day? She clearly isn't working, and her web site cannot possibly generate enough income to cover her grocery bills and other expenses.

But in fact, she's just eating a lot. That's only potentially harmful, not actually harmful. It's rather like smoking, which is not considered cause for intervention, let alone removing children.

@34: Without some sort of assessment, we can't know that she and her husband are "in a better position to decide what's best for the kid." Hopefully someone (doctor, teacher, etc.) is aware of what's going on and has some comfort with it being a better idea, but we can't know that for sure. Extreme behaviour like this could just be extreme, or it could be a part of a larger mental health issue that could endanger her child.

The truth is, without knowing them, there's no way we could be certain.

@39 "That's only potentially harmful, not actually harmful".

Are you kidding me? Since when did morbid obesity *not* lead to early death? People that get over 500 lbs rarely live past the age of 50. Any doctor, veterinarian, hell anybody in the life sciences can tell you morbid obesity is as injurious to the body as smoking or baking in the sun without sun screen. Anyone who thinks otherwise is fooling themselves.

If the woman was single and/or without children, I personally wouldn't give a damn is she ate, starved, or cut herself into oblivion. Suicide, to me is a personal choice and right. I just hope she's leaving a substantial will to her child, and isn't making her child partake in this severely unhealthy choice.

On another note, I thought the Guiness Book of World Records no longer allowed entries based on unusual diets--they used to have people in it that ate light bulbs or car parts. I can't see why they would allow this one. Eating a lot of food to the point of death, isn't too much better than eating nails. One's just a faster death is all.

@39 She's eating herself into an impaired state--she can no longer go out without a scooter, and 12,000 calories a day means all but nonstop eating. If a parent were drinking herself into an impaired state, or injecting herself into an impaired state, we would hope that there would be some kind of social services involvement. This is not just a matter of someone struggling with a weight problem, it's someone who has made it clear that she plans to devote her life to being as unhealthy as it is possible for her to be. On the one hand, I like to think that we should be able to make personal and parenting choices without the government storming in. On the other hand, I think that a kid whose mother is eating herself to death while the other adult in the house cheers her on, has got to be suffering.

@35 "a person whose happiness depends on destroying their health has a mental health problem"

Yes, it's called the death drive, and it's similar to the phenomenon we see in HIV bug seekers. It's not self-sacrifice, it's willful, pointless, and tragic self-destruction. We're allowed to dispose of our bodies any way we want - doesn't make it any less sad.

It is a form of abuse when a parent commits suicide, even a slow suicide, especially while their child is young (and must be, since she gave birth less than 70 lbs. ago). It would be stupid and bigoted to argue that people who are simply overweight, or who smoke or drink a bit, are automatically unfit parents. It is perfectly valid, though, to question the parenting of somebody who takes eating to a level that everybody knows is deadly (not to mention needlessly debilitating) all to get international attention. Just like how a person who makes a great effort to smoke 30 packs of cigarettes a day, or drinks a gallon of vodka per day, is a bad parent.

This is all assuming that the story is real, which it probably isn't. The people arguing that it's perfectly fine to slowly, intentionally kill yourself in front of your young child so long as you do it through food are real, though, and that's the scariest thing.

Also, 40: If they became disabled by purposefully throwing themselves in front of a bus so that they could get a Guinness record for "most bones broken at once," then yes, I would argue that they are unfit to raise kids.

You people are pathetic and your attitude is the reason this country is on the decline, have you no vision? no desire to achieve greatness? to push the boundaries of possibility, to look god in the eye kick her in the nuts and say 'I am free and I am unrestrained by your pathetic laws of nature!' this is evolution, this is the essence of what it means to be a human, this is why the gods fear us.
Donna Simpson, wait her last name really is Simpson? really? anyway, Donna Simpson is an explorer, while some just happen to get really fat she is pioneering the frontier of human size and we will all benefit from the knowledge of just how fat a person can get. It may not seem useful now but neither did Relativity at first.
As previous posters have mentioned few would advocate for the removal of her child if she was bed and scooter ridden with illness, so why should her child be taken from her for following her dreams? For daring to achieve greatness? We don't all need to emulate her, nor should we try, for she is a champion and even the fattest among us are mere novices in comparison, but like all elite athletes who push their bodies to realms that are inconceivable to the common person she deserves our adulation and envy.

Also, there are news stories about a heavier woman giving birth (560lbs to Simpson's 532) in 2008 (http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/27…), and documentation of a woman estimated to have weighed over 1600lbs on a site that also states Guinness no longer publishes "fattest..." records (http://www.dimensionsmagazine.com/dimtex…).
