A Correction: Concern About Panhandling

Posted by on Wed, Mar 10, 2010 at 10:58 AM

In this week's issue of the paper, which is just hitting streets but isn't yet online (it's now online), there's an error in a story I wrote about Tim Burgess's proposed aggressive solicitation ordinance. According to a poll sponsored by the Downtown Seattle Association, two-thirds of downtown residents are concerned about aggressive panhandling. I accidentally said one-third of residents rated this as a concern. I regret the error. (The poll also found that the greatest areas of improvement in the downtown core was in aggressive panhandling, where residents' level of extreme concern dropped from 57 percent to 32 percent.) The online version will be correct when it's published later today and we'll print a correction in next week's paper.

Dominic, thanks for the online correction. I assume you'll run a correction in the print edition next week as well (particularly since the error came in a graph and not just in the text of the story)??

I'd also note that for the last 3 years over two thirds of residents in Downtown neighborhoods report being concerned about aggressive panhandling. It was a top three concern this year. And observations of panhandling have increased 55% from 2008 to 2009, as we discussed last night. Crime Downtown increased 22% during the same period, a rate that was higher than in any neighborhood Downtown.

in a poll of whiny entitled millionaires, including people who jet around the world and have a fancy condo in "Downtown", surprisingly, most didn't want to let the riff raff anywhere near them.

color me unsurprised.

the only polls that matter are the ones by citizens on election day.
