Did You Know This? I Did Not.

Carol Channing is one-quarter African-American.

From her Wikipedia entry:

According to Channing's memoirs, when she left home to attend Bennington College in Vermont, her mother informed her that her father, a journalist who Carol had believed was born in Rhode Island, had in fact been born in Augusta, Georgia, to a German American father and an African American mother. According to Channing's account, her mother reportedly didn't want [Channing] to be surprised "if she had a black baby". Channing kept this a secret to avoid any problems on Broadway and in Hollywood, ultimately revealing it only in her autobiography, Just Lucky I Guess, published in 2002 when she was 81 years old.

She was also born in Seattle. But I bet you already knew that.

I always assumed she was; I only recently learned that it wasn't common knowledge.

She seems like the cool old lady I'd like to hang with at the Crescent one night and hear her talk nostalgically about the great times she had in her life.

I knew neither of these facts. And you have just given me one more reason I love Seattle. Carol Channing is divine. (I am one quarter gay man.)

For as long as I can remember Carol Channing has always been 90 years old - I mean, for at least 35 years. Her actual age has finally caught up with her apparent age.

#18 that is awesome I love them & had no idea. Didn't know Brits could be half African American, but I guess it's the mom who counts!

Also, has anybody else ever heard that Carol Channing was really a man? I heard this YEARS ago from someone who also told me about Michael Jackson's supposed "arrangement" with the families of various young boys before the first (1993) abuse scandal hit the presses. The Channing thing has always stuck with me since because of how MJ's trials played out.
