Josh Friedes to Head State’s Largest Gay Rights Group: “Where we are right now is not good enough.”

Posted by on Fri, Mar 5, 2010 at 5:07 PM

The formal announcement will come out tomorrow at a swanky gala in the W Hotel, but Rod Hearn, co-chair of Equal Rights Washington, confirms the board has selected a new executive director. Josh Friedes, who led the campaign to approve R-71 and played a vital role in the Massachusetts marriage equality movement, will replace Connie Watts.

“We will now move forward as quickly as possible on marriage equality, and a huge amount of work will take place to explain that domestic partnerships neither provide us the legal equality or the social dignity that every LGBT person needs and deserves,” Friedes says. Having upheld the state's third domestic partnership bill with a vote last fall, he says, “We can go forward and have very positive, friendly conversations with people of Washington [explaining] that where we are right now is not good enough.”

With Friedes at the helm of the campaign for R-71 last fall, Hearn says, “it was the first time that marriage-like rights have been approved in any state at the ballot box.” Friedes has also helped push for several winning bills in the state legislature—including three domestic partnership bills over three years and an anti-bullying bill this week—while serving as a strategist and spokesman for the group. ERW has built a statewide army of volunteers, clergy support, widespread nonprofit backing, and a massive base of donors. The Approve R-71 campaign, under Friedes, raised over $2 million.

On his plate now: Pushing bills next year in the legislature that provide funding for anti-bullying education, money for training health care workers to be sensitive to the needs of older LGBT residents, and changes to the law so that “medically necessary care is provided to transgender Washingtonians,” Friedes says.

Excellent news! What a great choice by ERW. I've seen the guy in action. IMO choosing Josh Friedes means ERW is committed to pushing for equality with all deliberate speed. Congrats Josh. Congrats us.

[yenta] And don't forget men, he's single! Has a good job, probably just got a decent raise, nice looking. A good Jewish boy from Newton. So maybe he's not a doctor, but eh, you could do a lot worse. [/yenta]

Way to go Josh! Congratulations!

This is great news! I worked closely with Josh on the Approve 71 Campaign. I admire his leadership and his commitment to all the issues the LGBT community faces.

With Josh and Anne Levinson's leadership, our team did the seemingly impossible. We won the expansion of LGBT rights at the state level by the voters for the first time in United States history.

I am proud to have Josh as a friend, and extraordinarily optimistic about our future knowing his political skills will continue to guide our community forward.

This is great. After his work on Approve71, Josh will provide strong leadership to ERW going forward. Josh did a great job on the campaign especially embracing new online technology tools like facebook, and open "blogger chats with the campaign manager" each week.

the vote last fall was actually only for the most recent domestic partnership bill. if approve had failed, it would have left the previous two statutes intact.

Really? A "leader" who wants us to fight for gay rights without talking about gay rights?

@13 You mean you didn't see the tv ad featuring Jane and Pete-e talking about their family and contributions to society and how they had the same legal needs and concerns as straight older couples? Or the tv ad featuring Charlene Strong and her brother and sister-in-law talking about her deceased partner and the tragedy of their unmet legal needs? Or the video voter guide featuring Jane talking about what was at stake for gay and lesbian families? Or the many televised debates featuring openly gay representatives of the campaign talking about gay and lesbian couples and how they needed the same legal protections as straight families? Where were ya dude? MIA, apparently.
