They Never Get Over It

Posted by on Wed, Mar 3, 2010 at 8:11 AM

Equality—even after it's achieved, even after it's a done deal, a settled matter, the bigots will do whatever they can to undermine and disparage people they see as less than human.

The hardcore bigots never got over the emancipation of black people either, so it's no surprise.

Just ask racial minorities and women.

People like the Canadian Minister and many many Radical Religious Extremists have no identity, no self, no person-hood unless they identify someone else as "evil" or less than. It's not good enough to take a cause like hunger or poverty as "evil" it must be another human being.

That explains the Republicans' reactions to the Obama presidency.

Argh! I feel like I never get anything done because I'm so often writing nasty letters to racist/sexist/homophobic/Christianist jerks. We absolutely have to get a new leader for the federal liberal party so we can get rid of these Conservatives. They've been in power too long and it's been too awful for civil rights.

Huh. I guess Canada isn't all as perfect as they'd have us believe. What a shock.

I don't see the point of this remark at all. It's exactly as Dan said: Equality—even after it's achieved, even after it's a done deal, a settled matter, the bigots will do whatever they can to undermine and disparage people they see as less than human.

This just in: some people in power are jerks, and disagree with you.

Nobody's perfect, but in a game of relative sanity and decency, we've still got the US beat by miles and miles.

Yup, you're right. Some people always need an enemy. I have no idea how their feeble brains work, but it seems as though they are repulsed by the idea of living peacefully with those around them.

Oh Canada! You are so great. Why do you have a bad guy as Minister?

Ministers are chosen by the Prime Minister, and Stephen Harper is a fucking idiot.

@13 and fucking idiots are chosen by the people, unfortunately.

But after 5 years of legal same sex marriage, society is still intact, straight marriages have felt no repercussions and the average person hasn't even noticed it happening. One idiot tries to prevent people from knowing about this, and it's making national news, I've also been seeing outrage on facebook posts and twitter relentlessly for the last 24 hours. Equal rights for marriage is here (Canada) to stay.

What an irresponsible asshole.

The problem with his omission is not that it might discourage gays from coming here. The problem is that it won't discourage bigots. And that makes Canada a little less safe for everyone.

The one benefit of this is that we get to see the Conservatives showing their true colours, and that kind of social conservatism doesn't fly well here. Almost 1500 comments on the Globe and Mail site -- if you thought no one would notice this, Kenney, you were wrong.

Oh, and please, can we stop with the snarking about which country is better? The hockey game's over, folks, and we're all on the same side with this issue.

@14 Indeed. What we need is for Harper and his minions to keep showing that they're idiots and assholes and hope that the majority of the population sees it.

@17 I think what we really need is a viable alternative. With that, Harper would be gone in a landslide. :(

Keep in moind that the Conservative Party rules the country with a minority governement, meaning that most Canadians did not vote for it. Also, at the time that gay marriage was legalised in Canada, the Conservatives opposed it but their presence in Parliement was very small, and the Bloc Québécois as well as the New Democratic Party and Liberal Party, in power then, supported the bill.

Most Canadians do not support those radical views Harper is pushing. But the opposition is weak in every other party, therefore we tolerate him as a "better than Liberals" choice.

Let's not forget the many initiatives from Gilles Duceppe's Bloc, who supported gay marriage well before the Liberals ever did and opposed Harper's ambitions to eliminate gay rights in Canada. Yes, Alberta is as conservative as Texas can get, but Québec is far more left-wing than Vermont will ever be!

There will always be people who hate fags.

Even in Vancouver, a very gay-friendly city, there are incidents of gay-bashing.

I currently live in a country where they tried to have a gay parade last summer that had to be cancelled due to fears of violence. The thugs, who had been preparing for months, disappointed that there were no fags to kill, killed a random foreigner instead, in broad daylight, in the middle of the city. Gay activists tell me, in all seriousness, "things are much better now"

I don't think it's possible to completely irradiate homophobia. One must simply be constantly vigilant and work to ensure that the state supports the rights of all people.

We need real space aliens, then we could all pull together against them. This is how I view the progression:
Honey, I know the mate I chose for you has some issues, but at least s/he's of the same class as us. Your significant other is perfect in every other way, but it would never work out because they are poor.
Honey, I know the mate I chose for you has some issues and is poor, but at least s/he's of the same religion as us. Your significant other is perfect in every other way, but it would never work out because they belong to a different branch/denomination/religion.
Honey, I know the mate I chose for you has some issues, is poor and belongs to a different religious denomination, but at least s/he's of the same ethnicity as us. Your significant other is perfect in every other way, but it would never work out because they come from a different background.
then it's race
then it's nationality
then it's sexual orientation
Until the space aliens arrive and family members the world over are arguing: Honey, I know the mate I chose for you has some issues . . . but at least s/he's human. Your significant other is perfect in every other way, but it would never work out because they are of a different species.
