The Heat Is On for Google

Posted by on Tue, Mar 2, 2010 at 2:12 PM

I can't believe this hasn't been on Slog yet today: Apple has sued Android phone-maker HTC for infringement of 20 patents.

For some time now, Apple and Google have been pals—until recently, they shared board members (and Al Gore has an advisory relationship with both companies). But with each company getting into the mobile phone market, things have taken a turn for the nasty. With Apple attacking Google's partners on one side, and Microsoft and Rupert Murdoch hammering at Google on the other, things are getting very interesting for Google, which looked invulnerable a few months ago.

This is more of a sign that Apple is in trouble, not Google.

This is patent trolling at it's worst. There is prior art for everything that Apple is claiming. Another example why software should not be protected by patents.

@Will,

Thank TFSM it isn't. But that hasn't stopped people from trying to get the laws changed in the EU.

Apparently, Google decided not to respect the industry standard of "I stole it first, so it's mine, mine, mine."

It's time to rewrite the IP laws to reduce the litigation, and it is way past time to restructure the USPTO so that intellectual property is better understood and defined and is more limited in scope and application.

We also need the USPTO or, perhaps, a new regulatory body to create a well-defined and fairly regulated system whereby businesses and individuals can much more easily locate and license intellectual property.

Allowing intellectual property to be shelved and buried in the vaults of large corporate monopolies destroys the very lifeblood of a healthy, vibrant and innovative marketplace.

Unlock the selfish brats' toy boxes!

I'm pretty much in love with Google. I just bought the Nexus 1 (which is one of the causes of this lawsuit). Fuck Apple - Apple has gotten incredibly domineering about their products (gotten is perhaps too lenient). Google/Android still has a ways to go but they're putting together a comparatively-user-friendly experience.

One more reason to hate Apple Inc.

Nothing new here. Nokia is suing Apple for basically the same thing. Patents are a good thing, otherwise how will all the IP lawyers afford their Benzos and brie?

I love how Slog commentators defend IP laws when it comes to ABBA but not Apple.

I will never give apple money for this very reason. To make such a claim is completely absurd, you cannot patent a fucking phone. Unless they can prove HTC stole their exact code, which they aren't, there's nothing about the iphone that's so revolutionary that they deserve to be the only people on the market selling that kind of service. Steve Jobs can shove it right up his bum, I don't defend anyone's IP law crap, the entire IP industry makes me want to vomit. Nothing about what it does fosters growth, competition or any sense of fairness, the only language in the game is money.

Apple might be in the legal right to do this, because IP law has allowed for companies like Verizon to patent button pushing, but morally everything about this case is bankrupt. These patents shouldn't be used this way, and it's shame on Apple for acting like a 2 year old. They're already number 1, everything else is just shameless greed taking down competition with legal mumbo jumbo because they can't make a decent product. Fucking pussies.
