Council on May Seawall Vote: Not Gonna Happen

Posted by on Tue, Mar 2, 2010 at 4:55 PM

In an email, City Council President Ricard Conlin says that Mayor Mike McGinn's proposal for a taxpayer levy "is a reasonable idea for funding the seawall, and we will consider it as part of the package of funding initiatives for the Viaduct/Seawall project and in the light of other possible ballot measures in the next several years." However, adds Conlin, who ultimately holds the throttle on legislation passed to voters, "I think it is clear that it will not be going on a May ballot, but if we decide that it is the right idea, it could go forward later in the year." McGinn is asking the council to run a special election in May for voters to approve or reject a $243 million seawall replacement.

The Student Mayor has learned another lesson..... many, many more to go.

CONCLUSION: Don't blind side the Council and expect them to like it.
