Massive Earthquake Strikes Chile

Posted by on Sat, Feb 27, 2010 at 5:16 AM

Far more powerful than the recent earthquake in Haiti:

A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck Chile early Saturday, shaking the capital of Santiago for 90 seconds and sending tsunami warnings from Chile to Ecuador.

Chile’s TVN cable news channel was reporting 78 deaths, with the toll expected to rise. ...

The epicenter was some 70 miles from Concepcion, Chile’s second-largest city, where more than 200,000 people live.

Terrible. Hopefully their infrastructure provided some better support than what was in Haiti. According to a friend in Hawaii, tsunami waves are expected to reach Hilo at anywhere from 16-20 feet high today.

Not a lot of infrastructure can handle 8.8 for 90 seconds. That's awful.

Most importantly, has anyone checked with Pat Robertson to see what is causing all these earthquakes? I mean, besides plate tectonics?

My cell phone woke me up at 3:30 this morning with a text-message tsunami advisory, a service I signed up for on the West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Center years ago. Nice to know it works when it has to.

8.8 is huge. huge huge huge. and for 90 seconds. that magnitude and duration would challenge even the most earthquake-proof construction.

This is punishment for Chile getting rid of Pinochet.

So if Haiti gets a remake of We Are The World, what the hell does Chile get?
