A Peek Inside the iBookstore

Posted by on Fri, Feb 26, 2010 at 3:24 PM

The Unofficial Apple Weblog says it has a first look at books that will be available in Apple's iBookstore:

The authors include Stephen King, Timothy Ferris, Malcolm Gladwell, Dubner & Leavitt, Kennedy, Agassi, Palin and Beck.

No surprises there; like the Kindle, the iBookstore is probably going to focus mainly on big-name blockbuster titles for a long, long time to come. The base price for most of these ebooks is apparently $14.99, which means that the $9.99 ebook from major publishers is about to become a thing of the past.

Or you can torrent thousands of great books for free, and send a dollar or two directly to the authors when you read something.

Grassroots micropayments FTW.

I'm sure stealing people's property makes them happy and they'll be even more flattered after you've stolen it, to send them a couple of bucks....but only, of course, if you like your stolen property.

Any writer giving his work away for free ain't worth shit. Ask Sherman Alexie....

"stealing people's property," says someone called "Loony Left."

Is that name intended to be sarcastic? Presumably so, in that opposing any particular notion of "property," however absurd, will these days get one branded a Leftist. I would direct modern conservatives to the writings of the founders on this issue, but why bother? These writings are all in the public domain now, which makes the automatically Socialist.

When e-books cost more than paperbacks, even after shipping, I stop buying e-books. It's an outrage. Sorry, publishers, but you have fucked yourself over with this move. Kindle goes into the drawer, and iPad is stillborn (as an e-reader; the broader implication of this move is that books of any type cease to matter in culture. Enjoy your porn.)
