Say, What's This Over Here?

Posted by on Thu, Feb 25, 2010 at 11:31 AM

Why, it's a survey for Rising Voice, the youth division of Focus on the Family!

What do you think of social policy? What are the issues you’re concerned about? Rising Voice is a forum for discussion and a channel for you to give input and help us shape social policy at Focus on the Family Action. We want to hear your thoughts, learn your needs and, hopefully, provide helpful information and resources to help you impact your corner of the world.

Go here to watch a video explaining the survey (warning: Contains two uses of the word "dialogue" as a verb and the phrase "there's so many issues going on"). And, if you're a Christian youth, you should go here to answer questions like "What are the social and political issues you care about?" and "What can we do to reach your generation with a conservative message (what obstacles do we need to overcome)?"and (my favorite) "How would you change the way groups like Focus on the Family Action engage in culture or politics?"

Of course, I'm not suggesting that we fuck with this survey—heaven forbid!—I'm just alerting you that, if you're a Christian in your teens and early 20s, you might want to think about adding your voice to Focus on the Family's Rising Voice survey. Which, again, you can find over here.

Whoa look at the video on the right hand side of the page that is linked to. Look at all those nice young people talking ambiguously about how they want to make sure their voice is heard. Sounds like they are trying to project their voice out of some small confined space such as a closet.

Hey, that survey was fun! I basically said Jesus would want gay people to be able to get married. Maybe I should have misspelled the words and used poor grammar so it would appear to be truly written by one of them. Thanks for the link. I couldn't bring myself to watch the video though.

I suggested cherrypicking the non-evil ideas out of the bible (however few and far inbetwixt) and just running with those for a while. Would make for an interesting change of pace.

Oh, I thought it said 'Rising Vice'.

Nevermind.

I wonder how many script kiddies it will take to "watch" the video in an endless loop and "vote" ...

I mean, if you can write a WoW macro to have your droo enable bark after you swipe, it shouldn't be that hard.

I wouldn't dream of messing with a survey. The internet is, after all, how we should determine important matters such as this.

I just took them to task for not refusing to make their message all palatable for the godless heathens and such and be more overt about demanding theocracy. Just like Jesus would've wanted me to.

That "survey" is just a bunch of comment boxes. There is no way to aggregate and study the results and no way I'm going to believe that any human being is going to read them. That's nothing more than a feel good exercise.

Here’s my answers. Feel free to copy and paste.

What are the social and political issues you care about?

1) Helping the poor, social justice, stopping our nation's endless wars, full equality for gay men and lesbians, stopping discrimination against minorities.

How do you decide what issues are most important?

2) My conscience.

What can we do to reach your generation with a conservative message?

3) Stop trying to live in the 1800s.

How would you change the way groups like Focus on the Family Action engage in culture or politics?

4) Stop being so hateful, hypocritical, judgemental and sadistic towards people who are different than you. Treat people the way you'd want to be treated.

What inspires you to get involved in a political cause?

5) A strong desire to protect myself, my friends and family from people like you.

How can we help equip you to make a difference in your community, country, and world?

6) Ask for forgiveness for the way you've treated your fellow citizens.

Everyone should watch that video. First of all, the (rather cute) guy who starts and ends the video has the most sibilant s I've ever heard. He's a call to a masseur and a hit of meth away from being Ted Haggard. And the imagery is just brilliant. My favorite moment is the "We're drinking coffee and texting. See what normal young people we are?" shot.

I suggested the Focus on the Family replace their leadership with Jimmy Carter, because they should have a Christian in charge for a change.

Their "Top 10" page has several nice tidbits of advice. If Christians stuck to the kind of activities suggested on that page, they'd be top notch citizens in my book.

"Rising Voice" sounds very Hitler Youth-y.

I answered the last question with what I think would make any religion great. Understand and live the concept that your religious freedom is only just up to the point that it infringes on the freedoms of others. - - Of course, this is basically the exact opposite of what focus on the family is trying to do.

I took the time to actually fill it out, though I have to agree that it's probably no more than an opportunity to feel a bit of catharsis, rather than expect someone might actually read it.

My answers, copy and past at will:

What are the social and political issues you care about?

In no specific order:
Women's rights, Education, Gay rights, Environmental conservation and education, Accurately accessing immigration facts, Animal Rights, The rights of People over Corporations, Health Care, Small, localized farming, Community programming and support, Abortion rights, Renewable energy sources, ending war

How do you decide what issues are most important?

Living compassionately, recognizing diversity, engaging socially.

What can we do to reach your generation with a conservative message (what obstacles do we need to overcome)?

Stop pretending that you are a mouthpiece for Jesus. Stop cherry-picking some conservative parts of the Bible while ignoring other, equally relevant but completely ludicrous part of the Bible - it makes it clear to everyone that you are re-inventing the text to meet your specific needs, and then you look like phonies.

Live like Jesus did for awhile. Be poor. Love prostitutes. Refrain from judging others. Help the needy. Accept those who are different from you. Be loving and fair to all people.

How would you change the way groups like Focus on the Family Action engage in culture or politics?

See Answer above.

What inspires you to get involved in a political cause?

Knowing that I can help to make the world a better place, that I can protect the rights of my loved ones from individuals and organizations (like yours) who would like to take those rights away.

How can we help equip you to make a difference in your community, country, and world?

Stay out of my community until you learn how to be better people.
