Can you feel it? That tickle in the back of your throat? You are looking pretty green. You'd better stay home from work on Wednesday. You don’t want to infect the whole office.
Go ahead and start setting that up now. Put on your brave face and go to the store for props. All you need is a box of tissues and some cold medicine on your desk. Your boss will probably ask you to stay home. Whatever it takes—you need to sell it because the likes of Wednesday will not come around again soon.
If you have a particularly bad case, head home (or to a sports bar with CNBC) straightaway because the play-in games for the quarter-finals are on today at noon, 4:30, 7:00 and 9:00. The best of these will likely be the 7 pm Czech Republic vs. Latvia game, but with each game now single-elimination for a spot in the medal rounds, they will all be skated hard and worth watching. This is also the best time to claim your seat on a bandwagon for a Cinderella-like Slovakia or Switzerland.
As promised, Sunday was a decent preview of what is to come with three incredibly exciting match-ups. I gave up jumping up from the couch and just stood for most of the games.
Wednesday promises four quarter-final games on the same schedule as Tuesday, with the noon game on NBC and the rest on CNBC. At noon, expect more theatrical acrobatics from goalie Ryan Miller and team USA vs. the winner of Tuesday’s Switzerland/Belarus contest.
I am already extremely excited for the 4:30 game, which will likely be what many predicted as the gold medal match: Russia vs. Canada (assuming Canada turns it around against Germany). With everything at stake, look for more hits like the one Alexander Ovechkin put on Jaromir Jagr on Sunday. Canada will be desperate and Sid the Kid will be under immense pressure to come up big. The drama and the athleticism almost cannot be topped and THIS IS ONLY THE QUARTERS.
Stop what you are doing and start faking a cold right now.
