Mayor McGinn's First State of the City Address

Posted by on Tue, Feb 16, 2010 at 2:00 PM

mcginn.jpg
Mayor Mike McGinn will begin his State of the City address at about 2:10 p.m. before the Seattle City Council. Questions abound, naturally. Will McGinn use the opportunity to roll out any new plans—such as pledging to fulfill more of his campaign promises—or will he attempt to massage some bruised relationships on the city council. Also, what will he say about some of the most pressing issues in the city: the 520 bridge, the search for a new police chief, the First Hill Streetcar, paying for a new downtown seawall, and managing the city's budget?

Listen along and drop your thoughts and critiques in comments. You can watch on the Seattle Channel, or call in to the city council's listen line, which broadcasts the audio of any meetings in progress, at (206) 684-8566.

Outstanding. My guess: A call for more town halls to discuss how to deal with the streetcar, city budget, and seawall issues, as well as a secondary town hall to discuss the problem of financing future town halls.

Will it be in a town-hall format? I hope so. Those things have really been narrowing the concerns of Seattle down so the mayor can better focus his attention and get things done.

@1 - no, that's what the city council will do.

Our new Mayor is a man of action.

Which of course the Seattle-hating suburbs don't like.

he's talking a lot about youth and youth violence. i'm thinking a lot of plugging the youth & family initiative over the whole speech

"connecting people who need work with work"

isn't that what happens in the parking lot of Home Depot?

Obama created the 1 year lame duck Presidency.

McGinn created the 1 month lame duck Mayoralty.

Good going guys.

Hmmmm....what I meant to say was: underwhelming. He got lost, spoke too softly, said nothing about crime or public safety and a lot of fluff about climate change. I am losing faith that he has the ability to right his ship and lead the city. Sad cuz i like the guy.

Thanks for the link. Overall, it was a little gloom, a little doom, a list of ideals, all in a mellow tone. As he vowed to defend us against tunnel overruns, the crowd went wild: you could hear one person clapping very loudly, plus two not so loudly. Ended on fighting climate change so our children could raise their children here, as sirens went past outside.

Climate change is what will jack up taxes. Just look at BT studies on the reduction to 2 metric tonnes of global warming emission per capita and reducing it from the 6 we use now and do the math.

Crime and public safety - you live in a Port city, there will always be crimes, there will always be drugs, get over it.

You would think some enterprising Cap Hill salon would comp the man a weekly haircut and beard trim.

@12 - maybe, like most of us, he's just not into the whole Metrosexual vibe ....

I watched the whole thing. McGinn is so underwhelming he could bore the tunnel himself.

I kind of like that he writes his own speeches but it is not so good that it is so obvious.

He did make basic logic errors. Here's the first three.

1. The City's acomplishments in the last year, whatever they may be, belong to his predecessor. A guy that McGinn was pretty critical of.

2. He said that unemployment doubled in the last year? "It is at 9.2 percent almost double what it was a year ago." Actually, that is just about where it was a year ago.

So McGinn either hasn't been paying attention or doesn't know what he is talking about. Normally, not a big deal but, he is Mayor now and making policy based on his understanding or lack thereof.

3. He wants the City Lobbyist to go to Olympia to ask for more money so the City can provide more social services to make up for the state cuts. Uh, if the State had money it would not cut social services....

Lastly, I think it was telling how many empty seats they were for such a traditionally worthwhile speech and how little applause McGinn got.

"Crime and public safety"

Actually Seattle's very safe. Look at Baltimore, same size, 10 times as many murders. of course, Seattle is one of the whitest cities in America...
