Patty Murray on Small Businesses, Timothy Geithner, Community Banks, and Her Re-Election Chances

Posted by on Mon, Feb 15, 2010 at 12:49 PM

This morning Washington Senator Patty Murray showed up at the Wallingford Tutta Bella to talk business with a handful of small business owners. At the top of the agenda: how to get community banks to start lending them money again.

The business owners—including Joe Fugere of Tutta Bella, Hanna McElroy of Magus Books, and Dani Kone of Fuel Coffee—all told Murray about how much trouble they've been having getting the credit necessary to operate in a difficult economy. The senator listened sympathetically, talked about her proposal to transfer $30 billion in Wall Street bailout money over to community banks in order to un-stick local credit, and then, afterward, sat for a brief interview with The Stranger:

yeslet's give money to banks then it will trickle down to small businesses then that will trickle down to create jobs!

this will probably work as well as the program to give mortgage relief. Did you read about that in the NYT? Lenders use it to grab the $ incentives from the government, they only lower the i rate they don't lower the principal so they then squeeze out a few more months of payments and THEN they foreclose!

As stated in NYT this helps those lenders defer recognizing the bad paper they own.

We wouldn't want to just take government money and just hire people, the way FDR did. that would be socialism and Obama, Murray et al. are very sensitive to how republicans feel about things!

So 21st Century unemployed: No CCC for you!

But, if you're lucky in about 12 months a few dollars might trickle over to Evergreen Bank oopsie Umpquag Bank, then trickle out to Fuel, then maybe end up .....oh, going for a new latte machine...which will create demand for more coffee sales....leading to you being hired....no wait, it only creates more demand for latte machines....so um better go over to Italy the jobs created will be over there!

Her heart is in the right place. But she has been in that position for nearly 18 years and seems quite as feckless as she did when she first took office.

Hey she's the mom in tennis shoes, remember?

But now she's a solid supporter of standing rule 22 which empowers the minority and screws all of us.

Vote for Murray, "Upholding the Traditions of the Senate!"

I like Patty Murray. I think she's a decent person. She votes right. I am a dyed in the wool progressive and can't argue with her record all that much. Having said all that I don't care if she gets re-elected or not. She is no tennis Mom--she's supposedly part of the Senate leadership team. Yeah-- that Senate-- the one that is so dysfunctional that it can't get anything done. That Senate that watered down the healthcare bill so much Democrats have to hold their noses to care if it ever passes. That Senate that is posed to do still nothing on climate change. I could go on and on. If the Senator wants to win-- she damn better start speaking up on issues Democrats care about. She better start working on reform of the Senate rules. She better start having some town hall meetings with real Democrats-- not these select little groups. She has carefully courted a safe constituency like VA issues. Good for her on supporting veterans. But how about doing something controversial and showing leadership. Why isn't she speaking up against DADT? Fear of eastern WA vote? Come to Capitol Hill, Senator Murray--I am sure Neighbors or the like would love to have you there for a 5 pm get together. Talk to us--listen to us. Tell us "you get it". Show us that the most important thing in the world to you is not whether you re-elected or not. It's whether you are doing the right thing. Show you aren't afraid to tackle the big issues of the day and move public opinion by using your bully pulpit and power. I want to care if you get re-elected or not. Make me care by showing you really do care and are as interested in us and what we believe in as much as you like being part of the world's most exclusive club. If this is a rant, so be it. I am so sick of the Senate and it's two parties--the PARTY OF NO and the the PARTY OF NO SPINE.

Here's a plan, let's tax Americans, tax them good, and then GIVE that money to Wall Street banks and other Banks and have them LOAN that money back with interest to those self same tax payers (whose money it is after all) and hope some jobs will be created. What's wrong with this picture? The tax payers don't seem to mind. That's what's wrong.

Even though she's barking up the wrong tree on this, it's still nice to see her out and about.

The time to support banks is when they have failed (and even then the FDIC does not support the failed bank, it supports a healthier bank to take over the assets and liabilities of the failed bank).

Wow, it is so exciting when these Democratic senators stand up and take a position on which private companies the government should give away money to, and how that should be accomplished.

Meanwhile the Federal Reserve totally fails in its duty to regulate the banks, and Patty Murray votes to reconfirm Ben Bernanke anyway.

I hate to say it, but this woman is still in tennis shoes. The child kind.

When does she grow up and take the reigns of responsibility for being our state congressional leader?

If she really did want to help small businesses, she would propose starting a program similar to the student loan program where the government takes our $billions and gives it out in loans. Use the small local banks and credit unions to administer it as micro loans.

Right now, behemoths like Wells Fargo have no interest in loaning to the start-up. Even with a 90% SBA guaranteed loan they will not lend. So bypass the buggers and go direct.

Right now, I will vote for anyone but Patty - and that's a shame. Too bad she has failed us completely.

Eli - would love for you to ask her where she now stands on Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). She supported it back in the day and I have called and emailed her office for her official position now and have yet to hear anything. U have any insight?

Why don't we close the federal reserve? We don't need it. The government has the authority to print money ---interest free! That would fix the problem I say!
