Lynne Joiner will be reading in the U District one hour from now. She discusses the only American journalist who was in China in 1976. Honorable Survivor: Mao's China, McCarthy's America and the Persecution of John S. Service is about that experience.

Seattle Public Library hosts Michael Hogan as part of Acacia Foundation's Discussion Series. Today's discussion is titled "Investigating and Prosecuting Hate Crimes in Washington."

Two New Age-y book events tonight. David Spangler "will offer insights into these subtle realms of angels, nature spirits, and the spirits of the dead" at East West Bookshop tonight. And Seattle Unity Church hosts Donna Eden. As part of the 18th Annual Women of Wisdom Conference, Eden will read from Energy Medicine: From Ancient Healing Traditions to Empowerment in the Modern World.

And there are two poetry-related events tonight. Inner Chapters Bookstore in South Lake Union is hosting a "Tainted Love Poetry Slam," With a "Worst Date/Breakup Story Contest, complete with prizes!" And Denise Jolly and Matt Blesse read in Georgetown tonight. Jolly and Blesse reportedly "use poetry to build community." A community built on poetry probably would not last as long as a community built on, say, concrete.

Maria Finn reads at Elliott Bay Book Company. Hold Me Tight and Tango Me Home is about how Finn left her husband and found Argentinian tango. This could be a romantic Valentine's Day reading if you're thinking about leaving your husband, I guess.

The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here. And if you're planning on staying in and you're looking for personalized book recommendations, feel free to tell me the books you like and ask me what to read next over at Questionland.

Hi, this is the author of Hold Me Tight and Tango Me Home. I did not start dancing tango and leave my husband. Rather, I found out that my husband was cheating on me so turned to learning tango because it understood a broken heart. Check out the author video at
www.tangomehome: http://tangomehome.com/videos/

Really, it's not awful. You can read the first chapter at http://www.algonquinbooksblog.com/
