Google Fiber for Communities

Posted by on Wed, Feb 10, 2010 at 1:42 PM

Forget about Google Buzz: This could be Google's big thing for the year:

Google is planning to build, and test ultra-high speed broadband networks in a small number of trial locations across the country. We'll deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today with 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. We'll offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000, and potentially up to 500,000 people.

This is the future. Everybody go nominate Seattle for this. If you work for the city, you should nominate Seattle right here.

Apparently, my gmail sign-on is not welcome at the linked nomination page.  At a glance, it seems Google is only accepting official requests for information from city governments for now.

Your google link doesn't like me.

Juneau(!) got streetview before we did, what chance do we have (other than Metamucil with my cereal) for early fiber?

@2 Paul just doesn't know how to link.

In any case, they're looking for specific communities, not entire cities. And I don't think you'll be able to make much of a case for Capitol Hill.

#4 the form only asks for city, not neighborhood, but yes I think it's supposed to be for small towns with shit internet access. Comcast is pure tits on Capitol Hill.

This looks great but it still does not solve the problems that hold back all fiber deployment. Rural communities are spread too thin and urban communities are too expensive because of the need to dig often. The ideal communities are the same shit hole suburban sprawl communities that are middle to upper class. Those are the communities that have enough money to pay for the service and are part of a socio-economic class that puts value on high speed internet. Lower middle or lower class people care far less about internet speeds than technical and educated people.

I would contact the city and tell them to look into it also. I know they were taking RFI for a fiber optic network a few years back. It is one of McGinn's talking points also.

@6 You have good points.

I don't get the 'experiment' portion of this. Fiber is pretty widely deployed, and the permitting is straight forward for ROW access, etc. Fiber to the home is a bit ridiculous, especially when there is tons of unused/underused LMDS and MMDS spectrum out there to take care of the connection from the ROW to the home.

@9 Thanks for that link. I just went and nominated Capitol Hill. My reasoning was essentially that because of the large number of people who live on the internet here, a fiber network would generate the good press that would make it easier for them to build their network in other places.

I'm not holding my breath, but that was still fun.

Constant once again pretends he knows anything at all about technology -- and can't even post a valid link. Pitiful.

It sounds as if Google is going to build this ISP from the ground up in an area with little to no true broadband options. I highly doubt Seattle is a viable candidate in that regard. If it were going to be in Washington, it would be someplace like Aberdeen or maybe Wenatchee.

If they want people to have fiber just make shredded wheat cheaper.
