The Rise of the Camel Burger

Posted by on Tue, Feb 9, 2010 at 2:52 PM

It's what's for dinner:

(CNN) — A new fast food sensation has hit the Emirates' culinary scene.

Right now, Dubai diners can't seem to get enough of the "camel burger."

"It's a sensation," Ramesh, restaurant manager at "Local House" the restaurant chain behind the burgers told CNN. "Everyone's bored of beef and chicken. So, as soon as the word got out, we had queues of customers eager to give it a try."

Not only are the exotic burgers a novelty, they are also a healthier alternative to their beefy American cousins, the restaurant claims. The $6 "camel quarter-pounder" is virtually fat and cholesterol-free, according to Ramesh.

The day will come when everyone is bored of beef, chicken, and camel meat. When that day happens, what animal will we turn to for the revival our excitement?

Well, by then there'll be Soylent Green widely available, of course.

My brother was in Iraq a couple of times as a cook for a Special Forces group... Sam and the other soldiers had really tried to establish good connections with the people in the town they were stationed in.. "I figure it is harder to shoot me or blow me up if I have talked about my wife and kids with local people."

so, for Christmas two years ago, a few of the local men decided that since xmas is an important holiday to Americans, they would help provide the kind of supplies they would have for a big feast. They went to the desert and caught a young wild camel... delicious apparently.

They brought it to Sam. for christmas dinner for the troops.

Luckily, Sam is a pretty smart guy and knew better than to look down his nose at a gift like this. He told them that his Army cooking school did not teach butchering, only cooking, so he had no idea how to butcher the camel to cook it. And that if the locals would do so, then have someone help him learn how, perhaps discuss a recipe with a woman who can cook camel, of course with her husband present as interpreter, Sam would give it his best shot. And he was smart enough to invite the locals as his guest to eat said camel.
Sam says it tastes like chicken... a really big, tough, gamey chicken... and he did NOT watch them kill or butcher it. He did take a picture of himself with the camel while it was still alive...
I love my brother.

I've become pretty fond of buffalo, which is relatively reasonably priced at a butcher near our house. If we're grilling out, I'd definitely rather have a buffalo burger than a beef burger.

I envision many, many square miles of Butler buildings housing gazillions of ortolans in battery cages. With solar on the roof and capped methane-generating manure lagoons, natch.

Is that the traditional long pig, or the genetically engineered, vat grown kind?

Charles, do you really think this planet will get bored of meat? No way, keeping people interested in fast, high-profit margin food is too easy (see McItaly). In 30 years we'll all be eating genetically engineered protein substitute anyway. Imagine a hamburger perfectly tuned to your genetic profile: lowers cholesterol, increases virility and tastes like ambrosia. That's a happy meal.

Emu is also good.

@15, camel is not kosher. They chew their cud but lack cloven hooves.

Kangaroo is both delicious and ecologically sound. It's probably the most sustainable meat you can find (kangaroo populations have grown out of control to pest proportions).
