An Overwrought Soundtrack and No Volver

Posted by on Tue, Feb 9, 2010 at 1:01 PM

..but other than that, Paul Proulx's 7-minute montage of the films of the 2000s is remarkably well done.

Holy cow that Dark Knight scene is amazing.

Thanks for the heads-up, MetaFilter.

How many Russell Crowe movies in this? God I love him.

Russell Crowe's done a lot of good work, but putting Gladiator on a list like this all but invalidates it. And Adaptation still seems like an emperor-has-no-clothes situation to me. But goddamn, that truncated shot from Birth is phenomenal.

I'm trying to figure out the criteria for inclusion since there is no "Brokeback Mountain," no "Children of Men" and no "Slumdog Millionaire"...unless I missed them, three of the best movies of the 2000s without question, I would think.

Hey, David, when you credit MeFi for something like this, can you link to the actual Metafilter thread instead of the front page? It's easy to find the post on their front page now, but it's nicer to be able to jump directly to the post. Thanks.

No Brokeback & no Talk To Her (stronger than Volver, I think). I was glad to see Audition in there. I did love Adaptation. And I liked the overwrought soundtrack.

Oh, what was the clip with the bunnies in suits?

@6: Inland Empire by David Lynch.

#7 did that movie have a point? God that was excruciating.

4: Sure!

8: The point was: watching long close-ups of Laura Dern's traumatized face is no way to spend three hours.

And yeah, no Brokeback Mountain is sad.

Ooooh, putting a film in the montage that Nathaniel Irons doesn't like "invalidates" it. Bow before Nathaniel's rigorous standards! Quail before his authoritative pronouncements!

You ridiculous little shit.

Dear God, NO!!!!! Now I'll be on a "Mad World" jag for the rest of the day, both versions:

It's lonely being a Roland Orzabal fan, but such sweet solitude.

Not to be a grump, but all this montage did for me is confirm what a dismal decade it was for actresses. This is like one big dude fest with a few chicks thrown in.

@11 In fact, I'm rather tall. And Gladiator was indeed one of the worst movies I've ever seen. What's the point of a popcorn revenge drama about hand-to-hand combat, if it's edited so choppily that you can't tell who's standing where?

Shit, I actually saw about 15% of these--exclusively on video. Wish I'd gotten out more in "the 2000s".

Inland empire but no Mulholland Drive? Or did I miss it?
Posted by Michael Wells on February 9, 2010 at 3:40 PM

Yeah, Mulholland Drive was in there. The scene where she's on the phone. That montage wasn't so bad, and I'd seen a lot of them. But I agree, no Brokeback? Most important film of the 2000s in my opinion. And, did I see a scene for the Miami Vice remake in there?
