Dead Man Found in Landing Gear of Airplane

Posted by on Mon, Feb 8, 2010 at 9:45 AM

BBC reports:

A mechanic found the body inside one of the landing gear compartments of the Boeing aircraft during maintenance.
The man, who was of dark complexion and dressed only in blue jeans and a long-sleeved shirt, was carrying no passport or personal belongings, police say.

He was possibly a stowaway and probably froze to death, they added.

Was the dead man a terrorist of a thrill-seeker? The movement of poor immigrants is almost never from a rich country to a rich country. What's up with this dead man?

There are many poor immigrants that move from rich country to rich country, particularly in Europe. In France there are entire refugee camps that have their location based on proximity to the UK, which has more lenient refugee policies.

There have been a fair amount of instances of stowaways who attempt to flee various countries by hiding in the landing gear, unfortunately overlooking the fact that they are going into conditions like Mt. Everest, i.e. 50 below zero temperatures and very little oxygen.

Proof that what you don't know can hurt you.

(yes, I am aware this was based out of New York but this exact thing happened on CSI: Miami a few seasons back...)

I knew that freezing to death was a likely hazard for landing gear stowaways, but I hadn't realized how extreme. If you can't afford airfare, you likely can't afford the necessary gear for -50°C/-58°F either.

Almost certainly a stowaway, not a terrorist.

Any terrorist that knows anything at all about airplanes would know that hiding in the landing gear is sure suicide. There's no pressurization, no heat, and no oxygen.

Sadly, poor stowaways often don't know anything about airplanes besides what they see in movies, and think this is a free ride.

More importantly, what's with our TSA and airport security when people can gain access to high-security areas, access the exterior of planes, hang out in them and take off with them without being caught? Meanwhile, I'm shuffling around the terminal in my socks with nothing larger than mini-bar bottles of Jack Daniels to comfort me.

Low I.Q. + Modern Civilization - enables persons possessing subnormal intelligence to survive in abnormally large numbers today. Occasionally their extreme stupidity overrides man's artificial protection for their fatalistic behaviors, culling themselves from the able and fit human herds of earth.

At least the poor guy didn't suffer. Once the plane got above 20000', he probably quietly passed out from lack of oxygen in a minute or two. Didn't know what hit him.

@10 - ignorance and stupidity are not the same thing. stowaway dude was clearly ignorant. we have no way to ascertain whether he was also stupid. just as I have no way to ascertain from your ignorant comment whether you are stupid, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.
